Podcasting in the Celtic World.

|

Looks at the two main – ok, the only two – Celtic Podcasts out there; Lostbhoys and Celtic Underground. In the interest of macabre, Podcasts 36 and Podcast 78 , respectively, are reviewed just after we lost 4 goals at Aberdeen.

The Celtic world has been crying out for an unabashed Celtic Minded spoken word view. Listening to the phone-ins and Radio Scotland – where in this particular game Richard Gordon was shreiking like a cat having sex when Aberdeen scored – there has always been the element of bias or anti Celtic feeling.

The Celtic Underground and the Lostbhoys have embraced this challenge like a Hippy embracing a tree while on E. Both have the same format – interview guest, discuss Celtic, past, present and future – but both are so different.

Lostbhoys are anchored by Chris McGuigan and his sidekick, Jamie Burchill. Jamie is a new to the Celtic game. He is an unashamed baseball fan who is struggling to make sense of his new addiction. He’s like Richard Gere in Pretty Women. Doesn’t understand why he has fallen for this thing of beauty but will hitch it up and ride it anyway. It makes him as loveable in an Uncle Buck sort of way who says things like “our blogs are bloggerific“.

Despite the subject matter being bleak there is humour. With predictions being done with a popamatic dice and humor fuelled chaos it’s a bit like verbal Tiswas with Chris not pulling it together but firing a custard pie to the face of his interviewees.

As the debate reaches a heated level as Chris, Gerry and Green in Texas debate what would save Mowbray – winning the cup, losing the league by 6 points – and why he would lose his job – empty seats – it takes the star of the show to bring calm it down. “This is your manager for next season” states Jamie.

Over at the Underground host man Eddie Pearson has up and coming Scots comic, Anthony Murray, to keep under control. The opening salvo involves Bellshill bashing and questioning whether Scott Brown can read nevermind be a Celtic captain.

Eddie is headmasteresq, or like that Geography teacher who was actually quite a cool bloke despite his love of trains as he reigns the guest back in and onto topic. We find out that the more catholic sounding name a MIB has the worse he is.

It’s a knowledgable and refined podcast. That is down to the format and the host who after years writing the a certain Rumour Mill is always likely to throw in a bit of gossip for the Ipod generation to pass off as their own and his laidback style.

The guest talks up Mowbray and his style of play, tells us Gerry Creaney was his hero and that all funny Scots comics are Tims.

Excellent listening. One is Tiswas the other is Saturday Swap Shop. Where else though could you hear an American saying H*ns over and over again and Kenny Miller and Kris Boyd being called scumbags?
