The Diary: Poppy Protest, Poppycock Up.

|

The Green Brigade deserve great credit for bring an atmosphere back to The Library. When The Diary heard that they had engaged with the PLC the first thought was that they were the most unlikely bedfellows. The Green Brigade are not universally liked or understood. They are seen by some as ‘daft wee laddies who jump around‘ and as ‘daft wee laddies who jump around that can read wikipedia and work Google’ when it comes to describing their political stand point.

A protest regarding Celtic wearing a poppy on their jersey next week did them no favours to dispel the notion some have.

No matter how good the point you are trying to get over a botched protest doesn’t do the overall cause any good. Whether you agree or disagree with the message it’s difficult to take it serious after such an own goal. There will be some red faces in the ranks.

Not their finest hour.

I think that the country could be doing with a proper anti war campaign but this is another matter.
The poppy has become a uniting symbol and any anti poppy display does not go down well. The GB are getting it in the neck from Celtic fans and maybe they should start to think of early November as a time to have a cheap holiday.
Great win on Saturday, come on the Bhoys!

The only thing the GB did wrong was mis-spelling the banner. I have had a look around on most message boards and blogs that have carried this story…the poppy is more decisive than ever.

Yes, divisive among the Celtic support, I meant the country at large. Scusi!
I got up this morning at 5.40 and the first thing I thought about was our visit to Swinecastle! I (we) need a life!

What place for a political protest at a football match, especially one such as the Poppy comemorations. That had nothing to with Ireland, Iraq or Afghanistan. For the ignorant out there it relates to the first world war where hundreds of thousands of Scottish, English,Welsh and Irish boys gave up everything for their country. The so called Green Brigade have shown themselves up to be what they are, an ignorant bigoted lot who are stuck in the past with former glories and historic grievances. Ireland and Britain are moving on aand these morons don’t like it. All they have done is reinforce in the minds of many people the idea that Celtic have strong affiliations to terrorism, that Celtic have no loyalty or ties to the country in which they play and that any perceived isolation is self inflicted.
    Shame on them.

If only it was about The Great War.check the press. Hardley a mention of The Great War. I think the GB have proved themselves to be anything but ignorant bigots with their statement.

  • Gannonball says:

In my opinion the guys had every right to protest, yes the way in which they did was not well thought out but something had to be done considering Liewell went back on his word about this. This blatantly has JR’s paws all over and the sooner he leaves/dies the better.
I couldnt give two flying f*cks about the media reaction to this and Celtics comments afterwards talking about bans etc is disgusting just to butter media up.

    • lordofthewing says:

The right wing press hate us anyway. Their reaction is yawnsome. Celtics reaction smacks of shutting the door once the horse has bolted.

  • IAN says:

The wearing of Poppies has ALWAYS been a devisive issue – even between soldiers who saw service in the World wars.(I know this because my father was one)Although i don’t believe the poppy emblem should be worn on Celtic’s (or any other clubs) jersey i believe the green brigade’s protest was misguided. We all have our own political views so for this reason protests like the one we saw on Saturday should be kept out of the ground.

    • lordofthewing says:

I agree but it has been brought into the ground so I have no problem with the protest being there.

  • Jay says:

Interesting one. The GB statement, as LoTW says, proves how intelligent they are. As do most, if not all, of their former banners.

The spelling mistake on this latest offering is a schoolboy error but doesn’t really matter. The content as a whole fails because it says enough to offend but not enough to explain why the argument has value.

Couldn’t this all have been avoided by Celtic refusing to put a red poppy on the shirts in the first place and instead having a white one? “You insensitive bastards, being against war and violent conflict in any form!” doesn’t quite have the same ring to it. Let’s see the NoTW run with that.

    • lordofthewing says:

A major feeling on the whole of this is the board have fucked up by not making a stand two years ago. It probably would have damaged the brand.

  • Bobo says:

Whilst I can see no particular reason for footballers to be wearing poppies on their shirts I don’t see why Celtic fans are so rabidly against it. The poppy relates to a far greater conflict than any seen in modern times, so great that “the troubles” in Ireland amount to nothing more than a neighbours dispute.
If the Celtic board were with the fans on this then they would indeed have taken a stand years ago and refused to wear the poppy. Furthermore nobody can order them to either. The fans have to face up to the reality that Celtic are owned by mega rich families of Irish descent who have loyalty only to their own money. This makes them no different to any of the other uber wealthy no matter their race or religion. Celtic FC have been nothing more than a cash cow to these bloodsuckers for generations. Every Rangers fan knows that Celtic could have put Rangers to bed for a decade or more if the board had made funds available to build on the early successes of the blessed Martin. How Rangers could win 4 titles without really spending whilst servicing huge debts says more about the Celtic board than Rangers themselves. And don’t give me the conspiracy theory either, it doesn’t hold water and does nothing for the clubs credibility, or the fans either. Remember the crowing by Dr John about fiscal responsibility in the club? Made him sound like a good Tory. Didn’t fill the trophy cabinet though. Dupes like the green brigade who have fallen hook line and sinker for the conspiracy line have only provided a smokescreen for the board.

  • S.C. Vaughan says:

The Green Brigade and those like them have about the same image in the Republic as N.I. loyalists do in Great Britain. Small-minded people posing as super-Irish patriots, living in the past, and deriding anyone who dares disagree with their actions.
They are no more welcome to Celtic F.C. than their bigoted counterparts are to the Rangers.
