Jock Stein And The Ibrox Disaster.

|

On the 2nd of January 1971, sixty-six football fans lost their lives watching the game they love.

Those who remember the terraces can all recount at least one time when the feeling of being carried along in the crowd, helplessness and pure fear washed over them.  Mines was 1985 Cup Final when the turnstyles brokedown.

No matter the team or the circumstances no fan deserves to lose their life at a game of football. It’s only a game and tomorrow’s memorial should serve as a reminder of that.

Let’s pay our respects to fellow fans.

It is frightening to be in a crowd when you cannot walk or feel yourself being crushed.
    Time for respect.

    Happy New Year!

Agree 100% with the sentiments. Would be good for Ran*ers fans to see that picture and think before starting some of their so called songs/chants or usual pish.

    Come on the Bhoys!!

    Happy New Year!!

How this sort of tragedy only happened once in Scotland is a mystery. The number of times I got lifted off my feet and carted 20-30 feet down the terraces at both old firm venues and Hampden as well, without injury, doesn’t bear thinking about. Strange though how it took an incident in England 20 odd years later to force change and bring in all seater stadia.
The Rangers fans will certainly observe the minute of silence given the circumstances. Would some of them do so if the boot was on the other foot? probably not. We’ll all hold our breaths waiting to see if the loose cannons in the green brigade play to form and shame the club. This is an opportunity to show that Celtic fans are not all disrespectful, bigoted morons as some take pleasure in claiming. Much credit will accrue to the club, regardless of the result, if the fans behaviour is irreproachable.
    All the best everyone.

Sorry, your aim at the GB is well off. They will stand in silence. A wee look at their website/message board tells you this.

        Happy New Year to all.

As you say, the silence will be observed by the Celtic support. We are a club born out of famine and injustice. We do not revel in anyone’s death or suffering. We are better than that.

    Here, here.

Happy New Year everyone; all the best to you and yours.

    Certainly hope so LOTW.

Big Jock was a decent man. Something some of the other mob cannot comprehend. I pity them. I will also register a complaint with the police should they start singing their ‘song’ about him, and suggest all Celtic fans should do the same. It’s a shame they feel that blackening the character of such a man is acceptable. Says more about them than him.

Who had big Sammi as man of the match?
    Come on the Bhoys!

  • Wildrover says:

Well done Bhoys ! The best collective effort I’ve seen all season. I was chuffed to see us close them down and beat them at their own game, to some extent. Looked like a team that realised the importance of this fixture. We need to take that mentality and run with it for the rest of the season.

First game in a while that I’ve not had that feeling of dread that we’re going to give up a goal at any second.
