R*ngers Want A Little Respect

|

The mass adoption of the adapted version of ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ has caused all sorts of opinions this season.
While some call it a’ wretched 1980s hit ‘ – maybe the song brings back bad memories of a sad, lonely spotty teenager being left on the sidelines at the youth club disco – and others struggle to find a non-offensive alternative.

Our neighbours have failed. They tried to adopt the ‘Big O’ with Penny Arcade. No takers, maybe it didn’t mention famine, child abuse or the Pope enough.

Those who are on the Erasure Information Service list may have spotted this in their in-box this week.

VINCE CLARKE’S FOOTBALL ANTHEM

It seems that Scottish football club Celtic have adopted the Depeche Mode track ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ (written by Vince Clarke) as their terrace anthem, here’s a clip of the crowd at last weekend’s match with Rangers singing the song before the game begins. In a further bizarre twist to the story apparently Rangers fans are rumoured to be responding with a terrace version of ‘A Little Respect’!

Here’s the song for those under 18.

I have no beef with Erasure though their Abba-esque EP was a crime against music. That’s more to do with Abba and not them admitting their pink credentials.

But, can you imagine a few thousand out of tune Scotsmen trying to hit that high note? The sound of a couple of hundred dolphins being butchered in a Faroese shipping village bay, with meat cleavers, in some sort of misguided right of passage springs to mind.

So, just give up. You’ll always be behind when it comes to originality or forward thinking.
