£2m For Kayal A Fair Price?!

Owen Coyle’s career has been noteworthy despite me thinking of Mr Burns from The Simpsons every time I see him on Tv. He developed a reputation for playing the game: “The right way” at St Johnstone and Burnley. Though, in truth any manager who doesn’t see hoof-ball as Plan A in this country can be lazily labelled as a student of the game.

Coyle’s defection to Bolton – shafting Burnley in the process – has hardly done his reputation any harm and most are not making a great deal that a student of the game still uses the delights of Kevin Davis instead of becoming Boltonlona.

But, I digress.

Last week a Bolton Insider (sic) stated that Coyle was looking to use his knowledge of the Scottish game to sign our Beram and a striker from Dundee United with more baggage than an airport terminal. £2m was quoted for both players with the insider stating about Kayal: “He has only played in Israel and Scotland.”

Kayal’s 10 games in the Champions League – more than most of Bolton’s squad will get in their career – and 18 caps for his country are conveniently forgotten.

While Scotland should be not held in the same regard as other leagues in the world, I’m quite certain that Coyle is of sound football mind. This opening salvo, via the medium of source and complicit press, is nothing more than an unsettling warning shot.

Kayal, worryingly, seems to be treading the path that’s been well worn before. One season, which his ability has shone, coupled with a meager contract, when compared to others less esteemed in the squad, has seen him turn to big-hitters in the contract game rather than those he was comfortable with.

Coyle’s opening shot, which our CEO wrongly commented on, has done the trick. The player will either get a move, which will see him go for a fraction of his value or he will get the contract he craves with a clause that will see him move sooner rather than later but to both parties satisfaction.

The later seems the more pleasurable outcome. Well, as pleasurable as it gets in the modern game.

You say about kayal having more caps in the champions league than Bolton players. However this is different to premier league!

    • lordofthewing says:

My point is this, the ‘insider’ used the spl as the reason for a low bid. The fact that they player had played in the CL and gained numerous caps for a handy international team was forgotten.

The epl is the best league in the world if you hang out of Richard Keyes and Andy Grays pubic hair.

Richest, over-rated and bloated. It will disappear up it’s on arse soon.

Kayal, like any professional footballer, has a responsibility to get the best for himself that he can. If a club can’t or wont pay him what the market dictates then he’s right to look elsewhere. It’s actually a win win situation as Celtic will profit from the sale and the player will get the move he wants, with bigger wages. If Celtic want to hold on to him then they must expect to pay more.
It’s now the lot of the old firm to live with this. The lure of European football isn’t enough when the gulf in pay is so great. Any time the old firm unearth a gem they’ll get a year and then the vultures will circle.

    • lordofthewing says:

Not arguing with any of that. Some, on both sides, will.

    • colin garvey says:

totally agree with everything you say that’s why I feel this must stop Celtic unearthing a gem then their off after a season we must include a lock tight clause in their contract now I know that sounds like holding them back but if we can offer improved contractual and financial agreements then we should be able to finally develop a great Celtic team again

      • lordofthewing says:

These clauses can’t be inserted at the beginning. In the market we are in then improving contracts ad hoc and putting in these clauses will become the norm.

  • conor88 says:

2 milion i want what hes on kayal if he played this way in spain would have a 30 milion price tag on his head 8 million is a very fair price but i wouldnt take it for 2 million you can get him on loan for 3 months

  • kingconan says:

    I disagree bobocop,

    HE SIGNED A CONTRACT.

If he wasn’t happy with it he shouldn’t have signed it. Celtic have him for the duration of the contract or until they decide to sell him. He has no right what so ever to look elsewhere until celtic say he can go.

    • lordofthewing says:

He signed it because it was an improvement on his previous employment. He now has been promised more money – by an agent, or a third party – as it’s been proved that he is worth more than the contract he signed. It’s football economics.

Football is not in the real world. In the real world you just hand in your notice…..

  • Joe says:

You are absolutely correct Tom. The CL and caps for his country are very different from the EPL. The difference though is that there are more than four teams in the CL and Internationally! Don’t get caught up in the myth that is the EPL. You were all shown just how good your EPL is by Barcelona two weeks ago, and they were toying with one of the four teams! The EPL is jot a balanced league anymore than the SPL is. The SPL has two teams from twelve, the EPL has four from twenty two! Not that different my disillusioned friend.

  • stevie says:

Celtic will dictate when Kayal moves or not I believe he’s still got 3 years on his contract well stick him in the youth team see how he likes that. Time now for football teams to say enoughs enough. Sign a contract stay at the club.

  • harrybhoy says:

kayal will stay..we will pay him more money, which he deserves and win the league next season with the wee man in central midfield…lenny already told him that hes gettin a new contract..remember?

p.s. he probably widnae even want tae go tae bolton for a night oot..
