GW248H265[1]James Sharkey was born on the 12th of February 1934 and later joined the Celtic family when he sighed for the Bhoys in the 1950’s.

James Sharkey simply referred to as Jim Sharkey or more creatively know as Snake Hips Sharkey fully sighed for Celtic on the 1st of December 1954. Sharkey was a player that lacked pace, but more than made up for it with great footwork and skill on the ball.

He would make his debut in a 2-0 victory over Raith Rovers a year later. He would also score his debut goal in this game.

He would spend around three years with the hoops before moving on to Airdrie. He played a total of 27 games for Celtic and netted a total of 8 goals.

Sharkey passed away recently at the age of 80 and as a tribute the player wore black armbands during their 2-0 win over Kilmarnock today.

Rest In Peace, Snake Hips Sharkey, You may have not been a long term player of Celtic but once a Celt, always a Celt.

The thoughts and prayers of everyone here at thecelticblog.com are with Jim Sharkey’s family and friends.

A lovely player, and when given an extended run scored some excellent goals. Two goals from him in a 5-3 victory over Rangers in the 1955 Glasgow Cup final when he roasted George Young. When in front of goal, he would take his time, get the ball under control, and score usually with a rising shot that scraped in just under the crossbar.

He was dropped from Celtic’s Cup Final side against Hearts in 1956 as a result of some harmless prank at the team’s hotel – a typical over-reaction from the chairman, and with a predictable outcome.

    R.I.P Jim

He was well before my time so my knowledge of the man isn’t great but reading about him for this wee post was very interesting. From what I read he seem like a player that could of had a more famous career than he did but what you said about the prank and that kind of answers the questions on that.

He was a skilled and gifted player, the type of player we could do with now.

He also once wrote for the Evening Times and as an want to be journalist it was an interesting read about the other side of the man.

Really strange that I have just read the news about Jim.
I lost touch with him well over 40 years ago when he was in his best form. I was but a small lad but remember him well.
He was my uncle and only two weeks ago was trying to track him down. He had connections in Forres,Morayshire.

I am sorry that you have just read of his death and that you were unable to track your uncle down before he passed away.
