The Evening Times last night stunningly pandered to the religious bigots when its reporters sought the opinion of Andy Goram on the forthcoming match between Celtic and Sevco.

Goram, who is notorious throughout Scotland as one of the most high profile bigots in the country, ought to be persona non grata in every reputable newsroom in the land; the Herald Group has a lot to answer for in publishing his views.

Speaking at the opening of a Paddy Power shop in Coatbridge, he was asked to discuss how he sees the coming game shaping up.

As per usual, his opinion was given through a decidedly blue tint; there was never any prospect of him taking any other line.

But this is not the first time Goram has been in the headlines of late; in fact, as this website and others revealed, he was one of the guests at Paul Gascoigne’s recent bigoted karaoke in Irvine, where another guest, and well known friend of Goram’s, popped up; the sectarian murderer Johnny Adair.

This is the company the man keeps, these are the people he calls friends.

The Paddy Power shop was co-opened by Frank McAvennie, who has no sectarian past and no murderous friends.

The media didn’t bother to seek Macca’s view, but they’re perfectly happy to print Goram’s.

We expect this from The Daily Record, where Goram’s black armband picture probably still hangs on the wall.

We might even expect it from The Sun, who once gave him a column in which to spout his inane claptrap.

But this is The Herald Group, this is Newsquest, and quite what they are doing seeking the views of this clown is a question only its reporters can answer.

We know full well he’ll never say a bad word against Sevco; he sees them as a continuation of Rangers, and that’s where his heart lies.

You might as well get an opinion from Andrew Dickson and the staff at The Rangers News.

So what exactly is the “news” value of Goram’s comments?

Doesn’t this simply lend him legitimacy, when our game should be trying to marginalise people who hold vile and bigoted views?

Those who wallow in the most negative aspects of what was the Glasgow derby, and who would seek to turn this game into that, are dangerous to the health and wellbeing of our national sport. It’s as simple as that.

Goram, whatever his history as a footballer, is little more than an unrepentant bigot, a man who once racially abused Pierre Van Hooijdonk and boasted about it afterwards, and who has no compunctions about being pictured spending time with Loyalist killers.

The Evening Times and The Herald better get this straight; Scottish football is better off without such people.

Their opinions don’t belong in a national newspaper because that lends them a respectability they simply ought not to have.

Goram’s opinion is already too well known to be newsworthy.

That they asked him anyway, in spite of all the baggage, should tell you the media isn’t really interested in news at all here.

This is an effort to stir the soup in the run up to the game.

They picked the right man for the job.

Shame on them for that.

Shame on Newsquest for running it.
