More Names, More Nonsense In The Hunt For New Celtic Boss

Ryan-Giggs

We’re deep in the silly season now, friends.

It’s another day, and another series of names. Ryan Giggs?

From where did that one come?

He has managed precisely no games.

His coaching career isn’t five years old.

He’s another Neil Lennon style appointment for me; a colossal risk balanced out only by a name.

This one seems like lazy reporting more than a strategic leak from Celtic.

This nonsense was being put out last season, and it originated with a low-order internet troll who’s previous articles have included racist and sectarian pieces. I covered that in a previous piece, and I can barely believe that a story which had no basis in reality and which begun with such a person, is being used as the foundation stone for the Giggs To Celtic crap in the papers today.

Likewise, we’re already having to sift through mountains of garbage about the Steve Evans link.

Whilst I could understand the attraction of such a candidate for Celtic – cheap, works within a budget, good record for developing players – I never really believed our club would be interested in appointing such a guy, especially not with his background.

There’s little rationale for this story, except that he’s a well-known Celtic supporter from Glasgow who looks set to be unemployed at the end of the season. Based on these things and nothing else, we’re already reading stories about how we’ve been “snubbed.”

Snubbed. Without an offer being made.

This is ludicrous, but it’s the kind of crap we’re going to have to get used to here.

It’s one of the reasons we should all take issue with David Hay’s statement of yesterday, which may or may not be the position of the club; he’s an employee so it stands to reason that it is in some ways, which was that the club taking its time was more important than rushing into a decision.

You could argue that he’s right, but that’s what makes the statement so insidious. It’s important to get the right man, of course it is, but in the background a big clock is ticking.

There are people at Celtic Park who must have had doubts about Deila for a while.

There was enough doubt in the stands and on the blogs. The whole of the media was hollering it from the rooftops. What, were our directors the last to bloody know?

The simple truth is that the search for a new boss should have been underway months ago.

If there isn’t already a candidate profile it’s scandalous. If there’s not already a shortlist that would be ridiculous. If this takes weeks that’s bad enough; if it takes months what further proof could you need that these people are asleep at the wheel? Champions League qualifiers are creeping up on us, and we need to be – we better be – ready, with someone in place long enough to have put his mark on the team and to know who his best players are.

The nonsense in the newspapers is entertaining, but only to a degree. There are some outstanding candidates out there, and some of them have no jobs at the moment and are ready and waiting. We better get out there and make someone an offer they can’t refuse.

No excuses Celtic.

Close the deal with one of these guys. Fast.
