Surprising statistic that proves we are not paranoid

|

Mr LOTW is on a blog sabatical this week but he still found a small essence of his time to come up with a very interesting statistic that could lay some of our “paranoia” finally to rest and leave it buried, for a while anyways: –

Mr LOTW said; “An Interesting statistic was sent to me …”
The other 11 SPL teams this season have scored a total of 316 SPL goals and have had a total of 6 players booked for goal celebrations.

Celtic have scored 56 SPL goals and have had 6 players booked for goal celebrations.

Now bhoys is this the proof we require?

I don’t think it is. The bookings are given for the way you celebrate. 5 for celebrating with the fans and 1 sweet as f*ck one for ripping the michael out of the spitter.

Lennon needs to have a word with the players and tell them to keep their celebrations on the pitch. Seriously, it could be the difference between having a player in or out for an Old Firm game.

    • lordofthewing says:

The argument is not whether they were deserved, all apart from Broonies probably were correct by the letter of the law, but whether the same law has been enforced over the board.

      The answer is clearly not.

  • well says:

weiss was booked for celebration too…

  • Patman says:

I can remember 3; big sammy against TFOD – justified booking. Willo against Dundee – even know broonie knocked him over the hoarding, he still moved into the crowd – harsh yet justified. Broonie vs doof – debatable whether it was justified, most likely was justified. Interesting statistic, however, one displaying how many times other team’s players have jumped into the crowd and not got booked would be clearer to justify your argument!

Just an opinion so don’t freak out lads!

I thought that the referee did not have any discretion in such circumstances. So looking behind these statistics the question is: are there examples of such celebrations going unpunished elsewhere? If there are, there is a prima facie case for investigation. There is one incontrovertible fact and that is that our players know what will happen in such a case. So why do it and leave yourself open to the second booking, which can put the whole result in jeopardy? Neil Lennon should be emphasising this to all the players.

  • BeastieBhoy says:

Agree with comments above, skewed statistic if it isn’t in relation to how the goal was celebrated.

Lennon should make it clear to the Bhoys, celebrate but keep it on the pitch if you can. In the right circumstances I think it’s worth it, and has it’s benefits, a bit of passion goes a long way…

Was Hooper booked against St Midden after his last min winner caused a pitch invasion?

Plus a week sabbatical? Thank god we have to the first of march to get out the house. It maybe longer…

  • If this stat is true, and I’m pessimistic after the Opta debacle, we need to elaborate on it.

It matters how the goal was celebrated and the stat doesn’t help us with that. It does seem unlikely that our players just have a habit of running to the crowd more than others, but the stat is useless without looking deeper into it.

    • lordofthewing says:

      What was the OPTA debacle?

      • There were stats posted on various forums after the last derby which claimed to have come from Opta. Many used them to mock Rangers fans as the stats suggested we totally outplayed and outclassed them.

Sadly, it transpired Opta didn’t cover the game and the stats were false. We pulled a Broadfoot, egg on our faces.

        • lordofthewing says:

Och that. Those stats were so obviously a wind up but don’t OPTA cover every game? If not then I have learned something new.

        • They may have been obvious to you, but they were posted on pretty much every Celtic forum and many bought into them. I only doubted them due to Jelavic only having a couple of passes and Weiss having the same as others on the field despite only being on for a short time.

My point is that we have no confirmation that stat is accurate, nevermind going into the details of it.

It could have come from anywhere. In fact, if you make up a stat and put it in your next blog I bet it’s on many of the forums in a few hours. There would even be some quoting it to work mates tomorrow.

I thought Opta covered every game too, but it turns out they don’t. I’m surprised the derby wasn’t on their list even if they do pick and choose games. Although it looks like they need to be hired to cover a game and I guess nobody gave them a call.

It’s up to the CLUB to highlight these things….
It’s all very well us sitting spluttering into our Buckfast in indignation…..
but, seriously, if and I repeat IF,….we are being shafted in this regard….the Club needs to address it …and get it sorted…..
I mean ..it’s not as if we give the SFA any problems…surely we’re entitled to the odd question…??… :0)

  • jmccal10 says:

The stats still hold some value, not much but some. Celtic have scored more than anyone else hence it adds up that they will have been booked most for celebrating.

However, I think the blog holds some weight. Has the same consistency been used across the board? I think not. There’s plenty of cases this season where referees, had they been strictly adhering to the rules of the game, would have dished out bookings. In most cases they apply common sense and act leniently. Where Celtic are involved no leniency is offered.

You’ve got to remember the emotion that surfaces from scoring a goal. For the scorer it’s enough to make him run to the crowd, for the wounded anti-Celtic referee it mean ‘ya bassa

    • lordofthewing says:

Here’s another one. Don’t you know that Gary Hooper has been booked more times up here since he spoke up against the MIB’s than in all his time in England?

He’s a an animal on the park right enough, I wouldn’t put him, Joe Jordon and Rino in the same room if I wanted the coffee table to survive.

  • jmccal10 says:

    Continued… You’re getting booked’.

Grr pressed submit by accident… I was in full flow a well.

  • leo says:

Check Kyle scoring in The wee derby, he is amongst the crowd on the sidelines along with most of the Hearts team…..but no booking?

  • davetheboss says:

    I remember watching Hearts v Hibs jan 1st 2011.
Kyle scores celebrates with the crowd. I speak ti my hibee mate and ask why is he not booked ? I said i bet the first player to do it the next day rangers v celtic will get booked. I was right Sammy at Ibrox booked.

  • ianin440 says:

Hoping that the players don`t get booked for that anymore.
    The line has been drawn!
