The SPL Need Artificial Intelligence

lordofthewing April 3, 2011

It’s about time the SPL got some new rugs.

So, another trip to Inversenkie saw a late call off. Celtic have bemoaned the ‘drainage‘ of the pitch while the Highlanders lay the blame firmly at the door of the match ref by saying the pitch was playable an hour after the inspection and that they had asked the SPL to allow them to delay the kick off by one hour.

I think we could presume that Tv dictated that wouldn’t be allowed. This is the same Tv that will see two 6 o’clock kick offs in the next 2 midweeks so not to clash with UEFA Big Cup matches on the same evening.

A few weeks back I watched a game on ESPN classic from Kenilworth Road. Mid 80’s Liverpool were the visitors, Craig Johnson and Jan Molby wearing Adidas Sambas and budgie smugglers as was the style at that the time. The pitch was artificial and the keepers had on more layers than your average arctic explorer. Though the good players willed out it was no surprise that the Luton and QPR experiments ended soon after.

That was almost 30 years ago. The technology has moved on. Now leaving your skin, cartilage, assorted muscle tissue on the carpet and getting a gapping wound, full of sand, which heals after months of infected puss seeping from it is a thing of the past.

On various streams you can watch games from all over northern Europe who have accept that their climates don’t lend to decent pitches. They have winter breaks, play games when the weather is ‘better‘ and have allowed UEFA approved artificial pitches to be used.

This season has seen many call offs. It’s been unpredictable. For me this rules out the full movement of our football season. Burntisland and the other boltholes in the Costa Del Fife don’t attract German tourists looking to top up their tans.

Let’s start the season earlier. Let’s have a winter break. Let’s front load the number of games we play when the weather is decent. Lets ensure that the number of call off’s are kept to the bare minimum by embracing the plastic.

Those ‘in the know‘ seem to be against this. Why? I think it’s because the park would no longer be a leveler. Look at the video evidence below of a player whose embraced the plastic then vote and comment.
