The strange aspect to all of this is the fact that Celtic have turned their back on potentially as big a market as the UK, a market that already has an affinity with the club. Of course I’m talking about America. This is a country that Celtic have toured twice or three times in the last decade, has a large Irish immigrant population centralised in specific cities, we hold a massive fans convention in Las Vegas every year, and I think that 3.24% of the clubs shares are owned by a prominent American business family who also own Gap.
Below is a table of information gleamed from the internet, so it must be true,
detailing the top American cities/metropolitan areas with a large population of Irish ethnicity.
City | Estimated Population | Estimated Irish Population |
Boston | 589,141 | 110,000 |
Philadelphia | 1,463,281 | 213,000 |
Buffalo NY | 1,170,111 | 131,000 |
Pittsburgh | 325,337 | 32,000 |
If the club are looking to tap into a new market can I suggest they look no further than
the good ‘ole US of A. In the lead up to the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays why don’t we take a short term lease of a couple of shops in a two shopping malls to sell Celtic tops and merchandise?
Or would that be too much like speculate to accumulate…….. as we know from recent seasons Celtic, as a business, don’t do that!
