At a time when a lot of footballers earn more than they ever have, and when some of them are arrogant almost beyond belief (and far above their actual talents) it is always a relief and pleasure when you discover that some of them still have their feet on the ground.

Last week, Erik Sviatchenko impressed everyone with his respect for the supporters and made himself an excellent ambassador for the club. Today Kieran Tierney has won plaudits for his own maturity and outlook, with his latest statements to the press coming under scrutiny.

For one thing, he’s talked about how proud he is to be wearing the Celtic shirt in the first team.

That’s something we want to hear from every single player, that understanding of what an honour and a privilege playing for our club is. Kieran’s journey through the youth ranks has given him a real appreciation for what it’s like at every level and that has helped him form a bond with the club and the fans that is already very strong.

But he’s modest about his achievements, giving a lot of credit to Emilio Izaguierre for the way he’s developed as a player. This is especially ironic as a lot of Celtic fans think he’s been more effective in the left back slot than the Honduran this season.

It is nice to read that, whatever you think of either player, because it shows that the rivalry between the two footballers is of the friendly sort, which knocks on the head rumours about Izzy wanting out.

Equally impressive was Kieran’s attitude towards international football.

Too many players, especially at big clubs, think that the second they play some good games they automatically become full internationals.

Kieran, who was patient in waiting for his Celtic debut in spite of sterling performances in the Development Squad, is willing to play it just as cool when it comes to playing his first full international game.

Kieran has been so consistent this season that it’s difficult to see who can beat him for the Young Player of the Year awards. He has come into the Celtic squad at a difficult time, when a lot of criticism is flying around as regards tactics and performances, but he has made the left back slot his own and has turned in displays so consistent that few, if any, fans have given him negative marks no matter how bad the rest of the team has been.

This speaks volumes for his ability and his confidence, but as we’ve seen with players like Islam Feruz these things are worth nothing if the attitude isn’t right, and this young man has his spot on.

It all suggests that he’s going to be a very big star indeed.
