A number of Celtic players have spoken to the press this morning and told the hacks that they take responsibility for yesterday’s disastrous defeat.

A few have even suggested that the manager be exempt from criticism such is their own culpability.

They have nothing to worry about on the being blamed score; most supporters are well aware that the players are partly to blame for this.

Even within the context of Deila’s ridiculous and inflexible tactical setup there’s no excuse for the kind of gutless incompetence we saw yesterday from too many people in a Celtic shirt.

Far too many of our “footballers” seem determined to disprove the maxim that the Celtic shirt does not shrink to fit inferior players.

A lot of them seem to fit into it quite neatly whilst misplacing passes, failing to close down opposing players, hiding whilst under pressure and generally collecting wages without bothering to put in a shift.

If rumours are to be believed, some simply don’t want to play for the manager, and it appears not to particularly bother them if their team and the fans suffer as a consequence. Anyone whose attitude stinks to that extent should feel free to run down the remainder of their contract and then piss off out the door.

This current crop is one of the most inept and incoherent to wear the Hooped jersey since the late eighties and early nineties.

With no major rival their trophy haul over the last five years has been pitiful, and I know some of these guys weren’t around for all of that … but too many were, and they ought not to have been. There are a core of good young players at Celtic; too many of their “seniors” are simply not showing up most weeks, with yesterday a notable example.

I saw a number of players give everything yesterday.

It hasn’t been missed that they were the newer members of the squad; Tierney, Sviatchenko, Roberts.

Others, longer serving players, were an embarrassment and a disgrace and if they think fan anger is focussed solely on the men in the dugout and in the boardroom they better think again.

Their concern for Deila would be touching if it wasn’t so phony.

If they really feel that way they should donate their wages from yesterday to charity.

Or better yet, tell Lawwell to dividie it amongst the staff at Celtic Park, those who’s own bonuses were cut to “allow” the club to “pay the Living Wage.”

That would restore some faith. That would demonstrate genuine contrition, and not the “throw them a bone and make them forget” sort in the papers today.

Those who do believe the manager should be exempt … well, too late as he can’t survive yesterday and deserves every iota of criticism coming his way.

But those players would do better to concern themselves with their own futures, because I can’t imagine a new manager worth a damn who would tolerate such shabby, shameful displays as some of these people have turned in lately.

A growing number of them ought to be following Ronny Deila out the door when this season ends.
