So, the transfer story of the day is that Moussa Dembele is in Glasgow for a medical prior to signing for Celtic. Some people have never heard of him, but those of us who follow football closely not only know who he is but are quite excited about the prospect of him pulling on the Hoops, should he decide that our club is his preferred option.

There are good reasons why we’re over the moon. Here are five of the best.

For Openers, He’s Free!

Sevco have been taking a shellacking recently for their cheap transfer policy.

But not all free transfers are the same.

Some are acts of necessity. Others are about sheer good fortune and being in the right place at the right time. This is one of those. Moussa Dembele might be available for nothing but English clubs have been circling and there were bids for him last year from top teams. As a Scottish club, we don’t have to pay a transfer fee. Only if he was moving somewhere in England would that be an issue … we’ve swooped in here under the radar.

Dembele Is Highly Rated … And Not For Nothing.

As I said in the previous bit, top clubs have been sniffing.

Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea were all keeping a beady eye on this kid and the London clubs in particular who know all about his qualities and would have thought him a nice addition to the books. That’s not all; he’s represented France at every level except for the senior side and that’s just a matter of time.

When you consider how strong their squad is, and the talent that runs all the way through it, to have come up alongside those players … it ain’t no small thing.

He’s Young But He’s Played In A Tough League.

Moussa Dembele is 19, with two full years of Championship football behind him.

That’s a higher level than the SPL, a far more competitive league with tough teams and tough games. This kid is ready for the top flight in Scotland. He can come right into the first team and play, without us worrying that he’s not quite able yet.

This is not a punt or one of our famous experiments, and although we’re not buying the finished article this kid isn’t a project.

The Re-Sale Value Could Be Astronomical!

I am not really thinking about this is a “development signing”, one of those ones we make so we can punt the guy somewhere down the line, but I’m not dumb either.

This guy could be a sensation and if he is then other clubs will definitely come around sniffing.

If they do, and he decides he wants to go, a kid rated as highly as he is right now would be expensive enough, but if this boy plays in the Champions League and does well his value will increase exponentially.

This Is Brendan’s First Signing And A Hint At What’s To Come!

If this deal goes through it will be Brendan Rodgers’ first singing for the club, and that’s exciting because a manager’s first sign can often be a sign of things to come.

When Martin O’Neill went out and brought in Chris Sutton.

This signing suggests that Brendan really does want to bring a better class of player to the club, that the release of guys like Scepovic (for whom we got money!) and Cole and Kazim Richards is no joke … this guy really is rebuilding, and this is a great start. Dembele, for the reasons I’ve given, is a cut above those guys.

Today is a pleasing development. Today is the start of something special.

This is an exciting signing and I very much hope we get it over the line.

Like the Rodgers appointment, this is a statement of intent.

We’ve moved fast because we had to. I hope we nail this signing down.
