The Long Kris Goodnight

Back in October of this year I wrote my debut  piece for this site entitled, “The Curious Case of Kris Commons”. 

I sang the praises of Kris and his wonderful career at Celtic.

Who can forget his awe inspiring 32 goals in 48 appearances or goals against Rangers? But in my heart of hearts, I knew the end was nigh for Kris. He’s been a favourite of mine over the last few years and I wanted him to hit the 100 goal mark for Celtic.

It still saddens me to see the “demise” of his Celtic career.

But it looks like the pragmatic side of me has come to the fore. I’ve accepted it, and just as I have it looks increasingly like former boss Neil Lennon is stepping up the chase secure Commons on an emergency loan deal which is likely to last until the end of the season, thus signalling the end of his career at Paradise.

It’s public knowledge that his contract is up at the end of this campaign.

Newspaper reports suggest that Lennon is desperate to sign the former Derby man due a raft of injuries, and he’s looking for an experienced player who could easily cover the absent Dylan McGeouch and John McGinn, who are both receiving treatment.

Realistically, Commons is probably still better than both through his natural skill and years of experience.

It’s no secret that Lennon is a huge admirer of Commons, and rates him as one of his best signings during his spell as Celtic boss.

For me it’s an absolute no-brainer for Commons and there’s a myriad of reasons why a move along the M8 to Easter Road would be a good move.

Firstly, and most importantly, he’d be guaranteed game time from Lennon as part of a deal. For any player at any level, that counts most. He’d add experience to a title challenging team and would likely chip in with a goal or two to help them on their way.

It’s also apparent that he’s an influential player and can turn a game on its head – certainly in the Championship.

He’s won titles and knows how to get over the line which could help Hibs fufil their dream of SPFL Premier Football and emulate their neighbour’s feat of two years ago.

At 33, Commons is going to struggle to get into this young, up and coming Celtic side who play with tremendous pace, something Commons lacks. That’s not a criticism per se as he could do things with a ball that most of the youngsters would struggle to do and his set-pieces were tremendous.

Last but not least. Commons and his wife give the impression that they love Scotland and are settled. To any young family that is paramount. Edinburgh is not a million miles away from Glasgow and Lisa could continue her charity work.

I think it would be something of a coupe for the Easter Road side too and would also signal their intent to secure the Championship title and promotion.

I’m sure Peter Lawwell, Rod Petrie and all involved could thrash out a deal to secure the Celtic man.

His time at Celtic is pretty much over; I think Commons is worthless sitting on the fringes and deserves better.

I’m sure most Celtic fans would echo my thoughts.
