There’s not one amongst us doesn’t love the Lisbon Lions. What these guys have done for Celtic, what they mean to Celtic, can’t be over-stated however much flowery language you use or however many statutes are erected or stands named after them. These guys are the foundation stones of the club itself. Those of us who never watched them know this club would be less without them; the debt we owe them is enormous.

Over on CQN they have long been about good causes and raising money for those is part and parcel of the ethos of the site. The work they do in the wider community – indeed, in the wider world – is extraordinary, and they’ve got a special commitment to The Lions.

A few years ago they moved into publishing; I helped co-found the magazine project. They’ve since released a number of excellent books on great players and great moments in our history. Now they’ve released one on the Lions themselves, and that wonderful day in Lisbon 50 years ago, when we won the European Cup. They’ve also released an excellent t-shirt to commemorate the anniversary.

Both are available, individually, for £14.99 apiece, or as a package, for £19.67.

All the profits from the sales will go towards something for the Lions themselves, but not just them but to the players who played in the earlier rounds but never made the Final – people tend to forget that the journey to that game was one undertaken by a squad of players, not just those who took part in the match – and the surviving families.

I cannot think of a more worthy cause within this Family.

I don’t have to tell any of you what these guys contributed to our club. I don’t have to tell you all how important it is to give something back to them. This is a great opportunity to do so, and there’s little doubt that the book will be a fantastic read in and of itself.

Everyone should check this out, and give a little back to the men who brought the European Champions Cup to Celtic Park, and in doing so forged the whole modern era of not just our club but Scottish Football. The effects of it are still being felt today.
