The SPFL is due to announce, publicly, that there will be a new inquiry into Rangers’ use of EBT’s.

Whatever that “inquiry” amounts to, fans will be watching.

Chris McLaughlin from the BBC has said tonight that “the BBC understands that no fresh sanctions are likely.”

Which means that either Chris is talking through his backside or he’s got it on good authority that some would like this thing to go exactly nowhere.

I would caution those people against that.

Don’t even waste our time with it, or that of the clubs. It’s not going to wash.

Because another sham, another put up job, another effort to play this down and have people cover their arses and those of others, will be worse than if they said they were going to do nothing at all. The last thing the game here needs is an official endorsement of ten years of corrupt practices. If the SPFL or the SFA thinks that a paper-shuffling exercise will cut it they are so far removed from reality they have to be somewhere between Donald Trump’s ego and Dave Kings anal passage.

To try and palm fans off with some fake internal investigation with the outcome decided beforehand and the remit already dead-set against actually doing anything would not “move this on”, not even close. It would pile scandal on top of scandal.

It would pour petrol on the flames.

They dare not even think about it.

Some mealy mouthed statement of intent or some “acknowledgement” of wrong-doing followed by a “but let’s all come together for the good of the game, eah, chaps?” would be the grossest act of self-harm in the history of our sport.

It would make them a laughing stock and worse.

Nothing would strengthen the resolve of the campaigners more.

Far from ending this, they will escalate it, massively.

Unless McLaughlin is simply indulging in wishful thinking, whoever “briefed him” has spectacularly misjudged the mood.

They dare not even try this.

Scottish football fans simply will not sit still for it.
