The Sevco Fans Quest For Self-Affirmation Has Taken Them Into The Gutter.

The media really is something.

It’s spent about two full weeks writing about the so-called shame of the Green Brigade, an organisation which has raised money for Palestinian charities, food banks in Glasgow, given enormous time to social causes and which has a well-thought out and consistent political philosophy based on inclusion and equal rights for all.

How tragic that such an organisation could want to associate itself with Celtic, eah?

How dreadful for our reputation, right?

Shame on the media for their coverage of recent events. Celtic and The Green Brigade have a difficult job to do in sorting out a compromise that will allow these fans back into the ground, but it hasn’t been helped by the appalling way they’ve been portrayed in the press.

Some Celtic fans disagree with the Green Brigade’s political stance, and almost all are shocked by the way they’ve invited UEFA scrutiny, but there’s no Celtic fan I know who is not in awe of these guys and the enormous good they’ve done, in Scotland and beyond.

The media doesn’t care about that. Sevco fans don’t care about it either.

They celebrated the ban on the Green Brigade as if it was something positive happening in their own club … wrap your brain around that for a moment. And they still managed to find a way to say Celtic had “dodged the issue” whatever the “issue” is in their febrile minds on any given day.

Yesterday, both the media and the Sevco supporters were almost gleeful in their reaction to a few instances of trouble in Sunderland.

I understand that; anything that paints Celtic fans in a bad light is just fine by these people, and their happiness over it is simply the scraping from the bottom of a very deep barrel from which they hope to find joy.

But at the heart of it was a guy who is a notorious bigot, thug and racist engaged in an orgy of self-promotion. He got enough of it that I won’t use his name. He had his “book signing” in an off-license, okay? An off-sales. I mean, seriously.

This is their guy, this is their role model?

He posted numerous self-satisfied videos of himself walking around, in a Sevco top.

And he was described as a “fan” of the club by the same media that thinks Celtic should want to disassociate itself with the socially aware and responsible Green Brigade. They see no problem with this lout, with this halfwit, with this complete goon, self-define as a Sevco supporter.

Yet I don’t see any problem with it either, because he is their textbook fan.

He is the poster boy for the club. I could not think of a better advert for them than those viral videos of him bragging about assaulting people whilst wearing their colours. I could not think of a better example of what their club is, what it values, and how it sees the world.

One fan described the last week as “the best of his life” on Twitter yesterday, on one of this eejit’s videos, showing a bloodstained and unconscious guy in a Celtic shirt. That was not the only time such a sentiment was expressed.

Forget what it suggests about the standard of the rest of this Twitter Twat’s life if this week was its overall highlight … what we have here is a perfect marriage between a self-centred egotist and a support that is just desperate for self-affirmation.

These people are desperate for friends, and are not bothered about plumbing the gutter to find them.

They just want someone, anyone, to tell them they are known and loved outside of this insular little country in which their fake institution still commands some level of respect, and has a grip on the balls of our football governors.

But they are permanently associated with these people, with the far-right, with the Loyalist fringe, with the race-baiters and those who peddle hate. They take an inordinate pride in it, in something that is morally reprehensible, in having links with scum.

The guy in question here is a fruitcake.

He’s the last person on the planet any football club’s fans would ever want the remotest association with.

When he tried to define himself as a Sunderland fan “for a day” yesterday their Twitter army told him to piss off. Sevco fans were all over him like a rash. It’s pathetic, and it makes his shame their shame. It contracts the “customer base”, which their support depends on, to the size of a pea.

This guy wanted attention and got it. I don’t know what’s worse for Sevco and its support, that he doesn’t care about them and latched on to give publicity to his anti-Celtic rant, or that he means every single word of it.

In the quest for self-validation Sevco fans vanished down the rabbit hole yesterday and into a shallow, rank gutter.

If that’s where they see their club belonging, fine.

But that Scottish football has bent its entire being towards their benefit this week just demonstrates the totality of how our game has been corrupted. Shame on all of them. This is the “institution” they’ve sparked a showdown and a crisis to protect.
