Patrick Roberts will be a Celtic player before the start of next week.

The longest running transfer sagas of the summer – the Armstrong contract and the Roberts deal – are now done.

Neither is the one we wanted, but don’t be disheartened.

Roberts is arriving on a new one year loan and Armstrong’s contract length isn’t the long-term deal we’d hoped … but there is scope with both for the agreements we were looking for and we can enjoy the best of both for the next twelve months as we chase another domestic treble and European progress.

This has been a superb week for our club, and every credit has to go to those who have worked, tirelessly, behind the scenes to get these deals over the line. The club is unquestionably in a stronger position than this time last year; these deals give us a chance to work on other areas of the squad which need our attention.

Roberts wanted to come home, and from the moment he made that decision this was really only ever going to end one way. He sees Celtic Park as his place now; he would commit to us long term in two seconds flat if the offer was on the table.

That offer will be made to Manchester City come January, and we’ll see where we go from there.

Our fans did not need a lift from today; as I said earlier, there is a feel-good factor at Celtic right now but this is the one the supporters wanted.

This is the one they were hoping to see.

When you think about it, what a deal we’ve had here.

In an era when top players only give clubs a couple of years of service and loyalty we’ve managed to obtain the services of one of the top young players south of the border for nearly three campaigns and the chances are that we’ll have him for even longer.

This is a massive, massive statement about where our club is just now.

The next seven days should see other players arrive as Brendan flexes our substantial financial muscle, and prepares us for those impending Champions League Group ties.

This is a day that will have folks at other clubs wanting to hide under the bed.
