What do you do when your football club is trailing behind its rivals?

You spend money.

What do you do when spending money fails?

You fire the manager.

What do you do when the next one comes in and it doesn’t work out?

Fire him and pray.

And when prayer doesn’t deliver Pepe Guardiola and a briefcase full of readies to your door, what then?

Easy. Sack the board.

You couldn’t make it up.

Sevco fans have seen all this before, of course, and the solution they wanted was much the same one as they are pushing for here. Dave King was their white horse saviour. He was going to come in and risk the inheritance of his children, to spend it all on the club.

Because he loves them, right?

This cold eyed professional puppy killer and proven liar.

And of course that turned out to be more nonsense from him, a man for whom the word “truth” was long ago excised from the dictionary. We tried to tell them it would never come to pass, but they believe what they want to believe and now, with the facts finally starting to sink in, with their plight now obvious, they are sharpening their knives.

But as I said in a piece last month, the question that ever hangs over Ibrox is “then what?”

They sacked Caixinha and nearly a month on have not replaced him yet because the board is divided on the idea of who to bring in. Get rid of the board … and replace them with exactly who? Who is out there, waiting in the wings?

When I wrote my sarcastic “Dear Diary” piece on Sunday, I had already dipped a toe into their forums and sampled the mood on them. The craziness that runs rampant in their support really is something to see. The calls for a boardroom revolution are still in their embryonic stages and I doubt they’ll get out of that state.

They have no unifying figure. They have no business plan. They have no institutional backing. They haven’t even considered what the costs would be. If there’s a new share issue and the existing loans get turned into equity the sums required just to buy the current directors out would be enormous. That money would go right into their pockets, and not the club. Those guys have kept on the lights and are entitled to that, but the Sevco fans won’t agree.

How attractive it all must look for anyone who was crazy enough to initially contemplate riding to their rescue. Their ingratitude is incredible to behold. Whoever came in could sink their entire fortune into the club and if it failed to push them ahead of Celtic they would be treated as if they had sold out and betrayed the fans.

“If King isn’t capable of spending the money he should give the club to someone who can!” shrieked one poster the other day.

They can’t see past that idea.

As usual they are venting for the sake of it; they have no answers.

They have no clue as to how they are going to improve their club. Calling for un-named people to come in and just spend money is frankly loony. They need to start thinking long-term, beyond Celtic’s quest for ten in a row, and towards a future where they aren’t dependent on hand-outs.

Instead their attitude to every problem is the same as it ever was; spend more money.

They don’t mind where it comes from.

As long as it’s not from them.
