Whatever Scott Sinclair’s current issues, whatever it is that he’s going through, the newspaper reports today that he’s a target for several English clubs should come as no surprise. He’s a fantastic footballer who still has a lot to offer Celtic.

For that reason alone, the media would love nothing more than to see him depart, never to return.

Scott was one of those signings I knew would be a hit.

I remembered watching him play superbly well at times for Swansea, and the idea of re-uniting him with Brendan was just good sense. I knew a guy with his skillset would monster Scottish defences and in the first season at least he did. In this campaign he looks well short of confidence though.

Now, whatever the issue is I have to think that it can be sorted out.

Whether it’s a personal problem the player has or simply one to do with football – carrying an injury, head in the wrong place, whatever – I believe that it’s something that can be resolved. The manager knows him, knows how to get the best out of him, and that’s what we have to rely on.

Scott Sinclair, on his game, is well worth hanging onto. It feels weird to have to write that; it should be a self-evident fact and not in the slightest doubt. But he has critics right now, and that’s a first since he walked through Celtic Park’s doors.

But those critics can’t get around the facts; even in a bad year he still has a goodly number of goals for this campaign. A striker would be proud of the record he has in a Celtic shirt, and if he can recapture the form of last season a replacement on his level would cost us far more than we’re likely to net in any transfer fee.

His value to us last season was immeasurably. We would not have been Invincible without him. Is it a coincidence that our drop in form this season has coincided with his? I think not. When he’s firing on all cylinders so are we. And for that reason alone it’s worth keeping him for next season. He has two years left on his deal; at the end of it we can see what’s what.

Unless the player has personal problems which absolutely preclude his staying at Parkhead I don’t believe there’s a chance in Hell that we will sell him. Scott Sinclair will be a Celtic player next season barring two things; his wanting to go or us receiving an offer so ridiculous that it redefines the word obscene.

English arrogance will prevent the latter … I trust Brendan to take care of the former.
