Of all the headlines I’ve seen today, the one in The Herald has to be, far and away, the stupidest.

Whoever wrote it ought to be sacked, because it’s ridiculous.

The story is about David Bates and how he’s mouthing off about being confident he can keep Dembele at bay … and then someone throws in this statistic; Dembele hasn’t scored in his last four Sevco games.

This honestly has to be one of the shittiest uses of stats I’ve ever seen.

The four games in question are the Scottish Cup semi-final of last season, the 1-1 draw at Celtic Park, the 2-0 win we secured there earlier in the season and the 0-0 draw at Parkhead.

In the first, Dembele was sensational whist on the park, including providing an assist for the opening goal.

He went off that day, injured, after about a half hour.

The 1-1 draw at Celtic Park was an off-day for the whole team, as was the subsequent 0-0 draw in this campaign when the player was still struggling for fitness.

And the 2-0 win we won at Ibrox earlier this season?

Dembele was on the pitch for just ten minutes ….

Moussa’s record against them is exceptional. Exceptional. He terrorised them in the matches last season, he flat-out terrorised them, which is why the report doesn’t talk about any of the matches peripheral to those four, when he absolutely ran riot.

I did a piece on Moussa earlier this season when the papers were talking about his lack of goals.

Most of those he’s scored have come on the big days, in the big matches.

He is a big game player.

If I were on the Sevco side I’d not be looking forward to seeing him play.

Honestly, you get sick of this stuff, you really do. This is the definition of a manufactured story and a manufactured headline, this is The Herald going full on crazy, full on tabloid, pandering to the stupidest people, the lowest common denominator.

As if the use of the term “Old Firm” wasn’t honking enough, Bates comments should provide an extra jolt of motivation for all of our players going into the game. This lot really do believe all this crap they are talking. This isn’t an effort to bluff us, to psych us out.

They genuinely think they are the dogs nuts.

Boy oh boy, how our players must be itching to shut them up.
