So Kevin Clancy got handed the Hearts v Sevco game today.
The last time he did a major game it was at Easter Road where he missed two blatant penalty kick decisions which should have gone in our favour.
The SFA is rewarding incompetence again, or worse.
You just know how this story goes, don’t you? Hearts should be on notice right now that just because Clancy backed the home side in Edinburgh last time with two huge decisions that doesn’t mean he’ll do so this time. Why, in fact, do many of us reckon it’ll be the total opposite?
We call this Operation: Stop The Ten.
It is so predictable, this stuff. So very, very predictable. The same failed refs get the big games over and over again. Standards never improve, and the more you see it the more you suspect it’s because they aren’t supposed to. Someone above these guys is perfectly happy to see these kind of “failures”.
Maybe they just judge success and failure in a different way.
There’s still a lot of bitching about his performance at Easter Road from those who thing Higginbotham was hard done by (he wasn’t) and that Ntcham should have been sent off (he shouldn’t). But the two penalty decisions weren’t even close. They were blatant.
Last season, he allowed Livingston’s Dolly Menga to attempt a head-butt on Ryan Christie.
Last season, he allowed Jon Flanagan’s scandalous elbow on Scott Brown, which was an outright assault.
In August 2017, he allowed Lafferty to escape without a booking in a match against Celtic although he gave a free-kick for diving. Lafferty was already on a yellow.
In December last year he chopped off a Benkovic goal against Motherwell, at Fir Park, for reasons known only to himself.
Clancy shouldn’t be near top flight football with that litany of errors, and I’ve only scratched the surface of it.
Giving him the Hearts-Sevco game, when we can all predict what that will result in, is just the SFA giving us the two finger salute.
