My job on this site is to talk about rumours, so here’s a peach; Shane Duffy is being lined up as our solution at central defence.

Do I believe it?

He would need to talk a major wage cut, but in terms of whether or not he could do the job there’s no doubt.

He would be a fantastic signing, and after yesterday the very sort we require.

I’m not in two minds about the quality of the player, just the quality of the story.

I’ve heard it from a couple of people, one of whom does have an inside track on this kind of thing, and so I’m inclined to give it more credence than I otherwise might … still, it’s a difficult deal to get done and if we did put in the work for it and get it over the line it’s quite a coup.

Duffy ticks the boxes and then some; experience, professionalism, gets the club and he has those physical attributes we are so clearly lacking at times. Not only would he step into the squad but he would be challenging both Ajer and Jullien for a starting slot.

This would be the kind of signing that materially improves the first team.

The question is, does Celtic have the ambition and the muscle to take on the EPL clubs who are sniffing around?

He would be expensive, although not as expensive as some of the daft numbers being put about in the media down south.

I guess the other question is would Duffy sign for us instead of them, almost certainly turning his back on better financial offers elsewhere?

Such are the obstacles and so good is the player that any deal like this would dramatically transform how the fans feel about this window so far.

It is the sort of signing we should be trying to make, and if we are then all credit to everyone at Celtic Park.

Let’s see what happens with this one, but for the first time in this window there’s a transfer tale here that genuinely gets the blood pumping.

Let’s hope there’s something in it.
