Celtic fans need to be careful getting over-excited over a routine win at Motherwell.

People like Kris Commons, who we don’t listen to on any other subject, are in the papers telling us that the win proves that the manager has not lost the dressing room and that everything is fine; if the Ibrox club had emerged from a bad, bad spell of games and performances and had won a single match we would laugh at anyone talking like that.

The corner isn’t turned until we’ve put together a run of victories, and closed that gap.

Things aren’t back to being calm and steady until we’ve won nine or ten league games on the bounce, convincingly. This team is capable of that.

We know this because in every one of the campaigns so far they have gone on such an extended run. Before we congratulate ourselves, that’s what we need to do.

Everyone wants this bad spell to be over.

We all want one result to the moment when we reach the turning point.

I thought maybe we had with the 2-2 draw at Lille, and the way we played in the first half. But we cannot ignore the scale of the disaster we witnessed on Thursday night and simply hope that we’re come through it because of one win.

There needs to be a dramatic turnaround at Celtic before we can start thinking that way.

Don’t get me wrong, it was good to see a decent performance from the players and we could have won that game by a few more goals … but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Doubts about the team and the manager coalesced over a period of weeks if not months, and they aren’t going to simply disappear because of one win. We needed that at the weekend, nothing else would have been sufficient after Thursday.

But we can’t get ahead of ourselves.

Right now we’re taking it one game at a time.

Happily that’s we built our incredible run of success in the first place.
