Since the start of the global health emergency, I’ve kept an eye on what people can do and what people can’t do. The vaccine might be doing its fine work – I have a piece to publish on that later – but this whole country still in Level 3 lockdown.

Which is why seeing Ibrox’s fans talking about a huge, and illegal, mass gathering in George Square next weekend is interesting to me.

The regulations on this are clear; “you can meet in groups of up to 6 from 6 household’s outdoors, in a private garden or a public place like a park or an outdoor area of a café.”

These regulations do not allow for open air parties involving thousands of total strangers.

Two-meter physical distancing should be in place for all others “unless in a public venue that is operating 1 metre distancing with additional measures being in place to avoid transmission.”

Will such facilities and measures be in place next weekend?

No, so two-meter physical distancing is the legal requirement.

This is uncomplicated.

It is the law of the land. Period. There is no ambiguity about the rules.

Most of the country is still not vaccinated.

Key age-groups have had their injections, but this thing is still creeping through the population and every mass event risks a spike.

As we’re coming out of this thing, slowly but surely, it is important – it is critical – that the government monitor the situation more closely than ever. An event like this skews the data at exactly the worst time.

It is not just illegal, in terms of where we are as a country it is idiotic.

But as usual the Peepul believe they have some special exemption.

It is the responsibility of Police Scotland and the local and national government to dissuade them of that ridiculous belief.

They are planning this openly.

That gives all the relevant agencies a week to either halt these plans or to put in place measure which disrupt them.

They should start with an announcement; Ibrox and George Square will be placed under enhanced lockdown measures.

A heavy police presence.

Fencing to keep away fans.

Groups which gather will be disrupted.

Fixed penalty notices will be handed out, in large numbers if need be. The tax payer will be happy to have the money.

This is a public safety issue. If this gathering of goons is allowed it could set back Glasgow’s lockdown timetable, not to mention that it could make a lot of people sick and even wind up killing somebody.

That is not a minor risk, and they must not be allowed to place the rest of this city and the West of Scotland itself in that kind of jeopardy.

The election is over. The Scottish Government has its mandate.

It no longer has to worry about offending the sensibilities of the Ibrox ubermensch; you know, fat guts, receding hairlines, scarred faces and low IQ’s.

There is no reason to pander to this lot now, no reason not to treat them as the state would any other group of its citizens.

We’re not demanding anything special here; enforce the law.

That simple.

Enforce the law.

Or what’s the law for, if Peepul can just ignore it and do as they please?
