The news that the Ibrox fans have come in for criticism by Police Scotland again made me laugh.

Reading reports of how furious they are about the setting off at fireworks at Livingston last night makes me think of a scene from Porridge, where a newly minted prison officer brings his bicycle into the jail with him and leaves it in plain view.

“I wouldn’t leave that here if I were you …” Fletcher says, incredulously. “There are one or two thieves in here, you know what I mean?”

The police are furious about the setting off of fireworks, and the contravention of the law and of public safety. Odd that they should be so concerned when the law-breaking and disregard for public safety started before the fireworks, when the fans gathered in that spot overlooking the pitch in the first place.

Amazingly, that wasn’t deemed worthy of action.

There is a level of tolerance for the Ibrox supporters which is completely at odds with the visceral reality of dealing with them. How many more demonstrations must we have that when you give the Peepul an inch that they will take a mile?

Police Scotland allowed them to gather, although the law on this is quite clear-cut.

When you let folks like this believe they are above the law and outside of the normal rules they are going to push and push and push their luck … you can’t pretend to be surprised at that.

Giving these people that inch is like bringing your bike into a prison … if you do something as stupid as that you can’t complain if it gets nicked. What did you expect in a stone hotel full of criminals?

This doesn’t bode well for the weekend at all.

There’s no doubt that fans are going to gather at Ibrox and march to George Square.

The club has been stonily silent on it, except for a throwaway remark from Gerrard last night, yet the Justice Minister was congratulating them on their stance yesterday before a word had been uttered in that direction.

The club doesn’t give a monkeys, it’s happy for its goons to take over the city centre and cause mayhem.

That’s their way of throwing a party. It’s the job of the police to prevent that, and they sent a very clear signal last night that they have no intention of doing so.

Their statement last night was ridiculous, because they could have put a stop to things quite easily if they could be bothered. The Ibrox fans think they have license to do as they please and nobody is really contradicting that view.

Trouble at the weekend is a certainty because Police Scotland has refused to draw clear lines for these Peepul.

It is weakness, and Ibrox always takes advantage of that.
