The news today that Ibrox’s second club has broken the SPFL’s rules on major sponsorship comes as no surprise whatsoever.

Their refusal to put the league’s new sponsor on their shirts, or display it in the stadium, is exactly what we’ve come to expect from that club; an almost gleeful selfishness that doesn’t care how it effects the rest of the sport.

It is boundless arrogance and reeks of contempt.

The press coverage of this has been very minor, and most outlets have gone with the idea that they are “relaxed” inside Ibrox having sought legal advice telling them there are “gaps in the contract” and they don’t need to do this.

But why in the world would they ever seek that advice in the first place?

Why in God’s name would it ever dawn on them to leave off the league’s main sponsor from their jerseys and from the stadium advertisements to begin with?

What goes through the collective Ibrox mind that they appear, again, to be picking a fight for no other reason except that they can?

This is the club which has decided to charge the media for attending press conferences, the first time in my life I’ve ever heard of such a thing. Journos would be better off spending their money at nettikasino, it would be more enjoyable.

In addition, we have their CEO, newly appointed to the SPFL board, attacking the organisation and Gerrard demanding a rule-change so that he can name more subs. Winning the title has unleashed their egotism to the full.

What’s worse is how the governing bodies continue to indulge this sort of nonsense.

Ibrox’s refusal to put the sponsor anywhere is a clear breach of the league’s guidelines, but you could interpret the rules in such a way as to say the demand on the print journalists is also against the rules.

A club which is willing to ignore regulations shouldn’t be allowed representation on the body which oversees them, yet the SPFL continues to overlook that obvious contradiction.

Our governing bodies are horribly run, and it took long enough for us to get a league sponsor in the first place. Ibrox’s behaviour here will only seek to put off other organisations which might want to consider such sponsorship in future.

It is an obvious middle-finger salute not only to the sponsors but to the idea that these things are for the collective benefit of all the clubs, none of whom have chipped in on this and all of whom should be outraged at the way in which Ibrox’s singular action jeopardises everyone else.

The press says that this stand-off has been going on “for weeks.”

Exactly what are the governing body waiting for before they impose sanctions here?

What are they waiting for before they kick Stewart Robertson off the league’s board for presiding over this needless confrontation?

Growing a spine maybe.

I know this; it might seem like a minor matter, but this is not a fight that the SPFL can afford to lose and if anyone on that board of theirs has a yard of guts, they’ll penalise the Ibrox club for even daring to raise such an issue in the first place.
