Last night I talked about how The Sunday Mail had no fewer than three pieces in it, all picking away at Sevco for one reason or another.

Today they followed up their weekend slamming with another less than complimentary piece, this time by the unlikeliest person of all; Keith Jackson himself.

And amazingly, it turned out not only to have been the best of the four, but it was the most vicious too.

The piece seemed to be suggesting that Gerrard has trust issues at Ibrox.

Doubts over which of the players he can trust, knowing as he does that some of them have had enough of the SPL and want moves to pastures new.

Doubts over whether or not he can trust the board of directors, because there are some amongst their number who were trying to flog his players before the Malmo game.

Of course, most of us knew that already; Jackson seems almost shocked to have found it out.

Gerrard also doesn’t trust the board to fund the next phase of his alleged revolution.

Reading that, and Jackson’s clear support for the manager, makes me wonder if those two are living in a parallel universe. Whatever you might say about their board, if some of them have decided that there need to be sales then they are finally gripping reality.

Jackson has hinted that all these doubts might put Gerrard off wanting to hang around; once again, he’s late to a clear understanding of this. Gerrard knows that last season’s triumph might be the high point of his career in Scotland and it would not surprise me if he’s already decided to jump at the next club which shows a little interest in him.

There is trouble at Ibrox; as I said in a piece last week, the three dreadful results following on the heels of each other are not signs that the club might be fragmenting but signs that the club had already started to and that it’s only now becoming evident.

Jackson clearly knows more than he’s saying.

He has sources at the club, amongst the staff, and the picture that his article paints is one of splits and egos clashing.

It’s similar to what started our own steady slide; an ambitious manager clashing with a board he believes is holding him back.

In our case, there were people at Celtic who’s ambition just didn’t match that of Rodgers.

At Ibrox, Gerrard has become addicted to spending at just the moment those above him realise that it’s time to hit the brakes on all that.

That won’t end well.

The press is going after this lot hard right now, but it’s not just because of the lockout and the SPFL crisis.

Some of them are worried by what they know has to be going on behind the scenes.

Some of them wonder how the club is making ends meet and what its directors might do if things get desperate and they don’t have the money to keep it going.

So finally, at last, they are asking questions … and we all have an interest in what answers they get.

Because that club is in a sticky spot, and there’s no clean or easy way out of it.
