As worrying as the result was yesterday, something that’s doing the rounds in the media today is just as concerning; a report in The Athletic about James McCarthy.
The story itself is pretty standard. He’s struggling a little to cope with the demands of training.
But the guy has not had to play a major role in a team for a while and he’s getting up to speed and that was always going to take time.
He’s 30. Which means that he’s probably not going to be able to run about like the 20 somethings anyway.
It’s tittle-tattle in other words, as is the claim that neither the management team or scouting departments knew much about the signing.
That sounds stone stupid to me, and I don’t believe a word of it. Ange signed off on this deal.
He would have raised a hue and cry otherwise.
It’s pure speculation and nothing more, and a particularly lazy sort of it.
More troubling is the assertion that the stuff from training comes from what the writer refers to as “Celtic dressing room sources”, which asks an automatic question; is there somebody at Lennoxtown who thinks their getting in good with a hack takes precedence over the well-being of the club itself?
All that story has done today is put pressure on McCarthy and sew divisions amongst the fan-base.
If someone at Celtic thinks that’s somehow to our benefit they have a different perspective on what helps our football club than most of us do.
That individual (or those individuals), should they actually exist, is selling our club out.
As far I’m concerned anybody leaking to the press right now in order to attack one of our players is a traitor to the cause, a cowardly fraudster endangering what Ange Postecoglou is trying to build.
The club must try to find out if this story is true, identify the leaker and severely sanction whoever is involved.
Whoever this person is, they need to think long and hard about what they believed they would accomplish here.
If their motives are selfish then they don’t care anyway, and I struggle to understand how any other explanation makes sense because it must be evident to even the stupidest person that this kind of garbage is the last thing the club needs.
It is an act of sabotage and that is not the act of a friend.
Whoever is talking out of school, they ought to understand that the hacks have used them here and that’s what they’ve endangered their careers at Celtic for; to be made to look like a mug.
After all, what credit do they get for being “in the know”?
This kind of knowledge is only special as long as it’s in house; now we’re all “in the know.”
But the leaker remains anonymous and gets nothing, the club is damaged and the journalist looks like a rock star.
Leakers of this sort are fundamentally thick.
It is embarrassing to think that we might have somebody so stupid working inside of our club, outside of the boardroom, where you at least expect it.
That individual would do well to make this a one off.
I hope they get caught regardless.
