Is Somebody In Celtic’s Dressing Room Really Stupid Enough To Leak Stuff To The Media?

As worrying as the result was yesterday, something that’s doing the rounds in the media today is just as concerning; a report in The Athletic about James McCarthy.

The story itself is pretty standard. He’s struggling a little to cope with the demands of training.

But the guy has not had to play a major role in a team for a while and he’s getting up to speed and that was always going to take time.

He’s 30. Which means that he’s probably not going to be able to run about like the 20 somethings anyway.

It’s tittle-tattle in other words, as is the claim that neither the management team or scouting departments knew much about the signing.

That sounds stone stupid to me, and I don’t believe a word of it. Ange signed off on this deal.

He would have raised a hue and cry otherwise.

It’s pure speculation and nothing more, and a particularly lazy sort of it.

More troubling is the assertion that the stuff from training comes from what the writer refers to as “Celtic dressing room sources”, which asks an automatic question; is there somebody at Lennoxtown who thinks their getting in good with a hack takes precedence over the well-being of the club itself?

All that story has done today is put pressure on McCarthy and sew divisions amongst the fan-base.

If someone at Celtic thinks that’s somehow to our benefit they have a different perspective on what helps our football club than most of us do.

That individual (or those individuals), should they actually exist, is selling our club out.

As far I’m concerned anybody leaking to the press right now in order to attack one of our players is a traitor to the cause, a cowardly fraudster endangering what Ange Postecoglou is trying to build.

The club must try to find out if this story is true, identify the leaker and severely sanction whoever is involved.

Whoever this person is, they need to think long and hard about what they believed they would accomplish here.

If their motives are selfish then they don’t care anyway, and I struggle to understand how any other explanation makes sense because it must be evident to even the stupidest person that this kind of garbage is the last thing the club needs.

It is an act of sabotage and that is not the act of a friend.

Whoever is talking out of school, they ought to understand that the hacks have used them here and that’s what they’ve endangered their careers at Celtic for; to be made to look like a mug.

After all, what credit do they get for being “in the know”?

This kind of knowledge is only special as long as it’s in house; now we’re all “in the know.”

But the leaker remains anonymous and gets nothing, the club is damaged and the journalist looks like a rock star.

Leakers of this sort are fundamentally thick.

It is embarrassing to think that we might have somebody so stupid working inside of our club, outside of the boardroom, where you at least expect it.

That individual would do well to make this a one off.

I hope they get caught regardless.

No idea about the rumours or leaks, but McCarthy seems like a Desmond signing all day long. Even at his very best he was a number 6, coming into a system where the captain is the default selection for that line role. He cannot play as a box-to-box 8, and never did at his best, in a system which needs two of them (and which we have zero of at the club).

  • Peter cassidy says:

Having watched him many times when he was fit never really thought he was that good to be honest over the last few years has been injured so might need to get plenty of games in but looks very slow but time will tell he was a Desmond signing without doubt this situation needs to stop as many of the signings he has got involved in have been a disaster and cost us millions i wish he would just #uck off and play golf or what ever he does him and liewell have held us back for years with there meddling in football matters thinking the knew better than the managers employed by celtic.

There was a lot of blowback in the comment section of that Athletic article. Kieran, the author, weighed in to clarify a couple things: (1) he double sourced everything related to McCarthy, meaning there isn’t just one leaker here but at least two; (2) he’s been sitting on this information for a while because it didn’t fit into any of the other stories he’s written recently; (3) he didn’t mention McCarthy’s fitness issue in the context of Covid because he couldn’t get that information verified. Doesn’t mean it isn’t true, of course, but important to mention because Kieran isn’t some Jack just throwing stuff against the wall to see what sticks. If he’s reporting it, it’s because he’s got reliable sources – in many cases multiple sources – and the information is reliable.

As for the claim that Ange and the scouting department weren’t in on McCarthy’s signing… why is this a surprise? Every manager in recent years has had players thrust into the team without the manager’s input. Given McCarthy’s passport, it doesn’t take a galaxy brain to figure out where this is coming from.

You act as if this is a new thing, there’s been leaks coming out of the dressing room for many years

  • Francis Lester says:

Your obviously not aware that the person talking out of school is James McCarthy himself. It was on bbc spirtsound last week that Pat Bonner told us the McCarthy told him himself that he was struggling with the training due to his run in with covid.

You’re assuming this apparently leaked story is true. It’s the smsm we’re dealing with here they’re all lazy bastards who couldn’t find a story if they tripped over it. I mean, maybe, just maybe, it’s a made up story. Our media are all copy and paste merchants there’s very few writer’s in Scotland deserving of the word journalist as a title.

Having said all that it’s not the first time an allegation like this has been made as Lenny was saying this last season and the season before. If it’s true this person has to found and made an example of so that no club would ever take a chance on them again. That might sound harsh but it’s the only way to deal with it. It tells the rest of the dressing room be on your guard as this could have a devastating on your future career and earnings. We’ve got enough to deal with as the media have it in for us already without some rat giving them more ammunition.

  • Bob (original) says:

The Athletic normally comes across as a decent, reliable outlet.

The salient point for the support – IMO – is whether the player was the manager’s choice – or not?
