Too Many Ex-Celtic Players Are Quick To Attack Our Current Squad.

With no transfer rumours to write, I feel at a bit of a loose end at times … but then something happens which gets me to write something outside of my area.

Pat Bonner has attacked Ajeti this weekend, following in the footsteps of Frank McAvennie having a go the other day.

There is a tendency now amongst our ex-players to do this, to think that being former Celts somehow makes it okay that they slam the current first team players in the worst possible way. These people have forgotten what it’s like in the spotlight.

In fact, let me say that again; these guys never knew the spotlight as it shines right now, as it’s amplified by social media. They never knew a time when what you say on one news show or podcast or newspaper interview is blown up a thousand times.

How easy it must seem on their side of the lines, sniping, no longer under any pressure. They can say anything that pops into their heads, and they never get called on it because there are no consequences for doing so.

It is easy where they are, out of the firing line, no longer being called out for their mistakes or their errors in judgement.

Call them on their own careers and they try to tell you that’s not the point; some of the folk who have criticised us over the years were in teams which grossly underperformed by the standards we’ve come to recognise.

Some of them barely won a thing in their careers.

Some of these guys would have fallen apart under the relentless pressure current players have to live with.

I’m not here to defend Ajeti – he has been terrible in the last few games, although he was getting into the right places on Sunday.

But too many ex-Celts find it easy to slag our players as if they never made mistakes of their own, as if they’ve forgotten what it’s like to be under scrutiny during a ball spell. We don’t want a media that sucks up to us and pretends everything is okay when it’s not, but for some of these guys to constantly take shots at those wearing the colours right now … it stinks.

This isn’t about disloyalty, although it should be; this is about lazy journalism and these people making their name with the easiest sport of them all. Nothing gets headlines like ex-Celtic players slagging Celtic, and they know it and that’s why they do it.

They are getting attention at the expense of players who they might once have shared a dressing room with.

It’s absolutely shameful.
