Sutton Slaps Down Lennon By Reminding Him Celtic’s Mess Is Largely His Fault.

Tomorrow I’m going to dissect, in full, Neil Lennon’s brazenly selfish remarks from last night, but for this evening it is enough to say that no less a person than Chris Sutton, his own former team-mate, has reminded him of the truly important thing; that Celtic’s current mess is in no small part down to him and the wreckage he left behind.

It is important that someone like Sutton says this. Lennon thinks that the Celtic support who wanted him out are largely idiots and spoiled children. It is important that an early put down comes from within football, and in particular those who know him.

Ange is cleaning up the shit-show that Lennon left behind, and we all know it.

Lennon lost a dressing room, whilst this guy is trying to build one.

Fans understand that we’re at the start of something; from the minute Lennon was appointed the second time many of us understood that we were at the end of something, something that should not have been lost.

Sutton did not miss him today. “A lot of this mess was on Neil, and that’s just the way it was. It’s like somebody dumping a big lorry load of horse manure on your front garden, moving out next door and then complaining about the smell.”

Ange will not be able to hide behind Lennon forever, of course, because one of the things that drives me mad is when someone in power blames everything on the guy who was there before him; that has a very limited half-life, but in a pinch it can work.

For those who’ve seen Traffic, the outstanding 2000 film, there’s a great moment when the outgoing drug tsar tells his successor that on his first day on the job he should write two letters for his successor.

The first letter is to be opened at the first onset of crisis; it should read “just blame me.”

The second letter should not be opened until the next crisis. It reads “sit down, write two letters.”

Lennon should have written his own letter for Ange; instead, even now, he’s passing the buck.

He would be furious if Ange laid any of the blame for the current mess at his door, althought it certainly belongs there.

I am glad that Sutton called bullshit on him, because someone needed to and the press is so busy sticking needles into their Ange Postecoglou voodoo dolls that they were certainly never going to point out to Lennon what is blindingly obvious to the rest of us.

Sutton gets it … and boy, he has let him know it tonight.
