You have to laugh, you really do.

Ibrox fan groups were planning a wee display in honour of their new manager at Hampden at the weekend, even though he is too gutless to take the game on himself and will be sitting in the stand. The plan was to turn their half of the ground orange.

You don’t have to be a genius to understand that this isn’t just about his Dutch background, of course. This team were demanding orange away tops when Gerrard was in charge. The marketing department at Ibrox will have a blast with this and the media will pretend not understand why a handful of others are making a fuss about.

This plan, though, like so many other Sevconite masterpieces, had one giant downside; as people were swift to point out online, Hibs play in green and white. The Ibrox fans disaster plan risked turning the ground into a giant tricolour.

Cue a lot of embarrassment when this was pointed out to them.

There are probably stupider football fans in Britain. But if there are then we can’t easily identify them, probably because they take the sensible precaution of not drawing attention to that fact. This lot … they are so arrogant they advertise their stupidity.

Doubtless they will put on some kind of show for Van Bronckhorst, but they are an embarrassment to themselves. This time a fortnight ago it was Gerrard who was the hero who could do no wrong.

If you’d told them then that he would be gone and all the backroom team with him they’d have said it was just more Timmy nonsense … but anyone who looked at the situation logically knew that there was a good chance of Gerrard going to Villa.

Van Bronckhorst has already made the perfect start; he’s admitted that Ibrox is a stepping stone to a job in the EPL.

If he survives it.
