The Daily Record’s Latest Gutter Headline Draws Fire From Celtic Social Media.

Tonight, Celtic social media is slamming The Daily Record, and deservedly so, over its latest gutter headline.

It is about our third new signing, Reo Hatate.

Their scummy headline reads “Reo Hatate breaks Celtic transfer silence as he delivers brutally honest ‘culture shock’ prediction.”

It is one of the most egregious examples of misrepresentation I’ve seen in a while.

Now let’s be clear; this isn’t a misquote. It’s a misrepresentation. It’s taken from a post on Instagram, in English, from a player who doesn’t have English as a first language.

“Playing abroad is one of my dreams. I think I will have a hard time with football, personal life, language, food and so on.” That’s what he said. Not exactly alien emotions for someone moving to a foreign country, but as he says it’s one of his dreams.

And he will not be a stranger in a strange land either; we now have a growing wee Japanese community at Celtic Park, so the transition will obviously be much easier than it would otherwise have been.

I think it’s a mistranslation.

I think that’s obvious, and I am fairly certain that The Record knows that it’s probably a mistranslation.

It is certainly a gross misrepresentation. The player has moved to play for a manager he knows, to play alongside fellow Japanese at a club which will be exceptionally welcoming to him.

He will be part of the Celtic Family before he knows it; indeed, he already is.

Yet The Record has chosen to represent him in that headline and in the article that follows as a fish out of water, already scared to death, and convinced he won’t hack it. It is a disgraceful headline and a piece of trolling through the gutter.

And it is being widely slammed by our supporters, including some of the blogs, who recognise it for exactly what it is, and I am pleased that they have done so.

The press is going to use every underhanded tactic that it can to undermine these guys right from Day One.

But our fans are already wise to it, and they will not let it happen.
