King’s Mad Offer To “Buy” Ibrox Out Of The Celtic Friendly Contract Is Brazenly Low Politics.

Wow. Just when you think the Ibrox situation couldn’t be weirder.

The press is reporting that Dave King has told the Ibrox board that he will personally cover the “shortfall” which arises from pulling out of the AngeBall Tour in Australia.

There are so many different facets to this that it’s hard to know where to start.

First, it’s obvious that this is the latest front in his PR war against them.

Can they honestly accept this?

It depends what strings he attaches to it, of course.

This was a favourite trick of Julius Caesar during the early stages of the war of the First Triumvate; he would make an offer of peace knowing that he had attached conditions Pompey couldn’t accept but which the rest of the senate might, thus dividing the opposition in various critical ways.

King’s offer is in public. His demands are not.

This will not bother those who want the friendly cancelled; they’ll see an exit route being opened up by this guy, and the inference will be that if Park and his board don’t accept it that they are being totally unreasonable.

It is smart. King is a reckless loon but he’s no fool.

Secondly, if this was simply about money then perhaps the offer would seem a little more palatable, but this is about reputation and trust as well, as any signed contract is.

No matter what the financial effects are, he’s still inducing the club to break an agreement which they have made a commitment to and that further tarnishes them in the eyes of the world.

How could you take seriously, or treat seriously, an organisation that was quite so dismissive when it comes to its obligations?

King has never given a shit about that, but the rest of the Ibrox board can’t be so cavalier … although the SPFL and cinch can attest that they are often just as bad.

What’s left of their reputations would be shot to Hell if they agreed to any such bizarre scheme.

Who would ever trust these people again?

King has always had a willing constituency of fools in the media, and they’ve publicised this offer without giving it the least practical scrutiny … lads and lassies, for once I’m glad about that.

That old maxim of Napoleon’s that you never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake rings true here, and these folks are making a bunch of them.
