Words are what I do for a living. So I am interested in words. I am interested in the way they represent reality. I am interested in tone. I am interested in the ways in which the words people use can reveal bias. You see a lot of bias when you read our media.

I may be going mad tonight, but I think the BBC’s puff piece on who the media and fans chose as each club’s player of the year reeks like a dead fish left under a bed. It’s the words that bother me, and the tone of it.

This is what the Celtic section says.

“Benfica’s 23-year-old winger Jota has been a stand out as Celtic won a Premiership and League Cup double, with 13 goals and 12 assists, to lead in both the fans and writer’s polls. Whether he will still be at the club next season is yet to be seen, with an option to buy on the table but only after a considerable transfer fee is paid to the Portuguese giants. Japanese star Kyogo Furuhashi is close behind him but injury problems have curtailed his efforts, with David Turnbull’s early season form, and the outgoing Tom Rogic’s recent inspired performances, both putting them close.”

You have to love the negativity in the paragraph about Jota, and that’s what it is. Negativity. You also have to love how they focussed on Kyogo’s injuries and Tom Rogic being “outgoing.” Where’s Callum? Abada? Where’s Giakoumakis? I guess the players who have been stellar for Celtic are only worth mentioning if they’ve been injured or are leaving.

Is it just me? Or does that read as wrong to other people?

Read the Ibrox piece. Nothing but positives. It is markedly different in tone.

“The battle to be (Ibrox) player of the season had more players fighting for the crown than any other club. Captain James Tavernier’s incredible season – 13 goals and 14 assists in the league, as well as notching his 80th goal for the club in the win over Motherwell – has him just ahead of Fashion Sakala and Joe Aribo in the writers’ award. He was close to taking the fans’ award, with Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos also battling away, but goalkeeper Allan McGregor is the man who just edged it. Of late his performances may have dipped slightly, but at the beginning of the season he was in outstanding form to win the acclaim of the support.”

That makes it sound like they were all absolutely brilliant. Am I crazy? Am I mad?

The crown, by Christ?

Have these people seen the team of the years? How many Celtic players?

How many from the Ibrox side?

Half of those Celtic players aren’t even mentioned in our segment.

Yet there are namechecks in that one for several Ibrox players … and four of them, by the way; Kent, Morelos, Aribo and McGregor, might be “outgoing.” No mention of that though.

This is what I do all day every day, and it makes you cynical sometimes.

But tell me, honestly, am I wrong about this or is that brazenly anti-Celtic and pro-Ibrox, whether intentionally or not?

No James you’re not wrong, I used to spot similar in the dr and it’s still happening to this day; although, thankfully, I’ve not held a dr in over 20 years. In the 80/90’s I would notice parts of articles in the dr that, even though it’s meant to be a ‘feel good’ story about Celtic or one of the clubs players, only to have to reread it because simultaneously, it’s also planting seeds of the wrong variety ie. doubt, or similar in the same article.
They simply cannot help themselves. OB’s to a man.
I would say to my father about it and having read the paper before me, he could now see, after rereading it, that yes, there it was slyly hidden, but there nonetheless.
They’ve been at that double talking BS my whole life James. FQ EM.

Here are just two of many many examples.

A CELTIC goal keeper makes a great save at 1-0 up . That save keeps them in it.

“The rangers” goal makes a great save at 1-0 up. What a save just doing his job.

CELTIC try to sign french school teacher.

Liverpool sign the french football technical director.
This was written by the same Scottish football journalist days apart

  • Bill easton says:

As a Protestant Celtic man for 57 years I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of the Scottish media as blatantly anti Celtic. They , like the officials in Scotland are recruited from the right wing establishment core in the West of Scotland and must comply with the Ibrox bias.

  • Frankie says:

Your spot on James moreorless is probably top at and no 1 for storing food in his mouth for months.

  • Jim O'Rourke says:

Yes it is brazenly both pro-*the rangers and loyally anti-Celtic. It was never going to be anything else. This is the environment we live in. Corrupt, biased and entirely in the pocket of anyone who is British/English Nationalist.

  • Seppington says:

You say it’s “bizarrely anti-Celtic” but this is the BBC we’re talking about here. It would be bizarre if it lauded us and gave them the faintest of praise.

Never forget, this is the broadcaster who refused to show a Star Trek The Next Generation episode unedited because it mentioned a re-united Ireland. People may think this is just an issue at BBC Scotland but it isn’t. Refuse to pay the licence fee.

  • Dando says:

    It’s intentional alright….

  • Thomas Daley says:

You are not wrong, but, bang on the money.
But, why oh why are your words on those hacks at the BBC not put more truthfully.
They are a bunch of blinkered bigots and that is being kind.

  • Sonny says:

Every thing in the news ,papers , television , bigmouth x servco players , and anything that in bluenosed , will tell you lies it is said that rangers were European champions .
A big lie , Celtic were the only club in Scotland, and the first in Britain to be crowned European champions, and that’s not a lie read the papers .watch the television archive
Footage is not telling you a lie ,
So to all servco fans stop living a lie that is not true., come to the real world and face your .demons , which is Celtic hail hail

  • MarkE says:

“fighting for the crown” is definitely a deliberate play on words to be interpreted by the mindset of the Ibrox loyal on two fronts!

The fact that the above phrase along with “battle” is in the opening sentence of the phoenix clubs review, while Celtic’s starts off with another clubs name suggesting it was they(Benfica) and their player Jota, who won the title for Celtic, definitely wreaks of bias on the part of the articles writer, and I’m okay with that as it also shows that they are hurting!

MSN news had a brilliant headline for a CCV article earlier, with the name “Catholic United” in the title!

…i had to read it, with an attention grabber like that!

  • Paul Kytzia says:

Not specifically anti celtic and completely factual, but, yes, a very downbeat section on Celtic.

  • Martin H. says:

Says a lot when a goalkeeper is their player of the year.

  • harold shand says:

All the radio , tv shows are biased towards them , just some try and hide it more , the BBC don’t , they’re all out hun . Last time i looked it up they had around 12 or 13 of their ex players as pundits , presenters etc

and yet that club won’t give the BBC the time of day .

  • SSMPM says:

Nothing new here, barely veiled bigotry for their hun supporter media followers. They never willingly promote our club as you can see by their gutted hun faces that trip up their pretence, though often a pleasure to see so much distain and hatred attached to talking about our successes while promoting bigots and racists as manager of the year. I don’t read their trash papers and only watch BBC to see how bias a country Scotland really is.

Who needs them Ban them all from Paradise.

  • Paul Duffy says:

Off course it’s intentions every season the same dig celtic pro huns

  • Stephen McAdam says:

BBC full in huns top to bottom ! And it ain’t no accident, glad I dont it ever will pay that fee
