Celtic Does Need Another Keeper But Would Benjamin Siegrist Be A Second Choice?

Interesting transfer rumour today concerning our goalkeeper position, and the name is a familiar one to us; Benjamin Siegrist, of Dundee Utd, a Polish international and a keeper that a lot of us have admired for a while.

He’s certainly no mug.

Siegrist has been linked with Celtic a few times in the past, and he was one of the names who came up over and over again last summer before we moved for Joe Hart.

Once we got the Englishman on board the idea of signing the big Pole went by the boards.

But some transfer stories refuse to die, and this one has been resurrected.

We need a backup keeper. We are on the lookout for one. Is this a place where we should be looking?

Certainly, he has the stuff. He could definitely do a job for us.

But that job would involve sitting on the bench more often than not, and so a question naturally arises; is this guy, who is a first team player right now and could go on to be one elsewhere, really going to come to Celtic and sit on the bench every week?

I don’t know if he would.

Even if he was perfectly confident of coming in and staking his claim, would he fancy it?

I would hope to have two goalkeepers who both believed they should be the first choice, fighting it out for that place, but I also know one invariably gets frustrated if he’s not playing and that the central defence gets antsy if the man behind them is being rotated.

If he’s happy to come and be a backup keeper, then I don’t think we can do better.

He’s got enough quality to be a starter, and I would be all in favour of it, and I’m sure that it’s a deal that Celtic would want to do.

But he won’t supplant Hart anytime soon.

I would understand if the guy, even on receipt of an offer from us, fancied it somewhere else.

The boy has too much quality to fade away as someone’s supporting act.

    I am sure he’s Swiss!!

So 2 things on that subject.
    1. Siegrest is a quality keeper, no doubt. He’ll never go somewhere as a backup, so whilst JH is here I can’t see it working.
    2. Ange clearly like to play with a settled core back 3 of the GK and 2 x CBs with zero squad rotation if possible. Having 2 GKs mixing it up may not be his preferred way of doing things, which I think is correct.
If we didn’t have a settled keeper at the club then yes, I’d be straight in for Siegrist.

Far too good for subs bench, and big joe would be first to agree

    I think Siegrist is Swiss…
