Excellent First Half Showing Gives Celtic A Fine Winning Start To Pre-Season.

You learn nothing in pre-season, and that’s a fact.

We saw some good performances tonight as a B side took on our first opponents of the season and ran up a 7-0 win.

We saw that we’ve got some great young players.

That our fringe players can put in a shift.

That Mikey Johnston has talent and remains party of the squad albiet forgotten.

I don’t want to focus on negatives because that was a good run out, and in particular in the first half. A handful of our players really impressed. I thought Boson Lawal was particularly good.

I thought our young striker Kenny looked sharp and in the mood.

I thought that our new left back had a good first 45 minutes and proved he can get forward with pace.

I like Ideguchi. I thought he had a fine game.

James McCarthy was decent but nothing to write home about. He wasn’t bad but he didn’t grab that one like a guy who wants to stamp his mark on things and give the manager something to think about.

Jullien did well and even scored, but really we weren’t playing against a side that was going to test him or the backline that much. The cameos were all nice, but nobody was truly outstanding and we wouldn’t have learned much anyone based on the opposition.

Still, the fans who were there had a blast. The B side played a lot like the A side played against certain domestic opponents last season. Had Ajeti scored a hat-trick tonight would that have moved the needle for him?

Had Jullien won every 50/50 ball would we have come away thinking that he had a chance to impress the boss and stay?

No, and none was terrible enough that they have been written off entirely either, although Ajeti really does come across like a guy who needs a new club for his own good.

He works hard, but so many parts of what we thought we were signing aren’t immediately obvious.

For all that, I enjoyed it immensely.

It is good to see a Celtic side again, and especially one that so completely, and easily, dominated. I am really keen now for the weekend and a higher calibre opponent and a much bigger test.
