Ibrox Finally Gets A Deal Over The Line, But They Needed Aribo Cash First.

So much for all the stuff you read in the papers about how the hold-up for Ibrox in getting their 28 year old striker signed was all on the Greek end. Is it a coincidence that they’ve suddenly been able to do this hitherto difficult deal?

Of course it’s not. They can do it now only because Aribo has been sold and they have the cash to pay for the guy. Otherwise that one would have languished in the To Do box for another month. The flagrant dishonesty of that club is unreal.

This window has been so revealing for them that even the bitterest and most closed-minded Ibrox fan must realise that much of what we’ve been saying all this time is 100% spot on. Their club is a debt-ridden basket case. Not even a highly fortuitous run to a European final was able to provide the manager with funds. It took the sale of a key asset.

And of course, the key asset went for a pittance. £6 million plus add-ons? It’s like a CelticBlog joke on them, a number below even what this site predicted they would get. One newspaper suggested that this might be the start of a spending spree.

If you’re choking back laughter you’re not alone. A supermarket sweep at Aldi maybe. But that’s not a spending spree however you dress it up.

Talk now is of offers of new deals for the likes of Morelos and Kent. Even now, with the clock ticking, there’s not enough interest in these guys to get deals done. You may be forgiven for wondering, if they want these players to stay that badly, it’s taken until now for the contract talks to take place. Van Bronckhorst believes his fans button up the back.

I don’t think even the offers of improved contracts with minimum release clauses is going to get these guys to commit. There has to be interest from clubs willing to meet those clauses for a start. Neither Kent nor Morelos is remotely worth an eight figure sum any more than Aribo was. Their fans must be shell-shocked at that fee, but read their forums; they are desperate to find some positive in it. “Oh he only cost us £300,000 ..” is the straw they clutch.

There is an old story that Ronald Reagan used to tell, and it sort of comes to mind at a moment like this. A kid gets up on Christmas Day and his parents tell him his present is outside. He rushes out and finds, in the garden, a huge pile of shit. He immediately grabs a shovel and starts digging. When asked what the Hell he’s digging for he says “there must be a pony in here.”

Ibrox fans can knock themselves out digging for their pony. This summer has been one big steaming heap of shit for them so far. On some level, they must know it.
