Is A German Defender Playing In France Celtic’s Other Signing Target This Week?

Reports tonight – unconfirmed – identify Celtic’s potential second signing this week as Moritz Jenz, who is a central defender who plays, currently, in France for Lorient.

He’s been there for a year, but it’s fair to say that it’s not worked out for him.

Celtic was allegedly – and I say allegedly – interested in this guy last season, although I am familiar with most of the names we were talking to and he wasn’t amongst them to the best of my knowledge.

If he was, it means that we know he’s been well scouted.

We’re clearly in the realms of Ange looking through the scouting reports.

He will do this carefully, and not just on the basis that these guys can play and offer us something.

He has spoken at length about wanting the right “type of people”, those who can fit into the squad and the group and who don’t cause friction. If this is the guy we know everything we need to.

There is some dispute as to whether or not it’s a permanent deal or a potential loan with an option to buy. I’d prefer we bought the guy outright if we’re sure, but at the same time I would totally understand if we wanted a good look at the player first.

The need for a centre back is obvious; only the kid Welsh looks as if he’s going to offer us something, although you can’t completely write off any of the others except maybe Jullien who I would think the club still wants to move out as quickly as it can.

If we bring in another centre back, as well as Mooy, I think the squad is in great shape for the coming campaign.

The manager will have backup in every key area, and although it’s entirely possible that we’ve got one more signing to come – look out for one late in the window, if the manager sees the need for it – this will pretty much prepare us for the season.

    You are an absolute dick!

  • John Gallacher says:

The kid Welsh will not do, he constantly makes the same mistakes and is severely lacking in pace, that with his tendency to ball watch means he will never make it as a Celtic player

    • Johnny Green says:

Nonsense, Stephen Welsh is no world beater, but he is a fine young player still learning the game and he does not lack any pace that I have noticed.

Ben Davies left sided defender would have been interesting for us. We almost bought him two years ago. Interesting he has gone to Ibrox. They have added a lot to their squad. We do need a CH and. DM for sure. We still look thin on the ground and have only made one first team starter addition to last year. I think we are struggling a bit in this window after a super start. We need those two positions added to with quality. Welsh and McCarthy need upgrading for CL in my view.

Progress. Development. Its starting to feel a lot like kidology now. There appears to be an over belief in Ange’s words by a lot of our support but its not being matched with action. Our defence is no better now than it was last year. The LB is a work in progress and Welsh is not at the level required yet. He may well develop into that player but hope and reality of the moment are different beasts. Julien was not available last year through injury and that, for differing reasons I guess, has not changed. He needs games to get up to scratch and we may yet need him. From what I can see he’s not being treated the same as others. He is a good defender with two years on his contract if extended. A new CB may well be on the cards but he’s no Bobo or even Julien. I had hoped for a better defensive focus. Standing still is not progress.

With Starfelt currently injured there is a starting place waiting for a centre back. If that is Moritz Jenz then only by seeing him playing in the hoops will allow us to pass reasonable judgement. Stephen Welsh, at 22, in no longer a kid. He needs to go somewhere to get regular football. He is miles below the level that Celtic require.

  • Johnny Green says:

The German player is right footed, so not really what we need as a cover/replacement for Starfelt.
