Ladies and gents, it feels like forever but the close-season is almost over, at least in terms of us getting to see our team again. The work goes on behind the scenes to get more signings done, but the business itself is going to start soon regardless.

Pre-season friendlies don’t usually dominate much of our thinking, or get the juices flowing.

But this year is different.

So keen are we to see this team again, and in particular our new signing on the left, that there’s eager anticipation for games that might otherwise not generate a lot of excitement.

The team lies out to Austria tomorrow; we’ll be playing before the end of the week.

Indeed, we’ll back in combat before this month closes out, with the opening day at Parkhead. It hasn’t been a horrible close-season, but it’s felt long and torturous in a lot of ways although there were internationals to break up the monotony.

But nothing beats watching your own team.

Nothing beats cheering on Celtic, and the campaign ahead is already looming as something special.

This time last year it felt as if we were running out of minutes and seconds as the start of the campaign grew ever larger in the train’s front window … this is a lot more calm. This year, it can’t come quick enough.

It’s great, then, that we’ve got two matches to look forward to in the next seven days, the first on Wednesday against SC Wiener Victoria. The second comes at the weekend, on Saturday, against Rapid Vienna, of all clubs.

That’s going to be a proper test and I have to admit that I’m looking forward to that game because of it.

We are almost there folks. The wait is nearly finished, and although I’d dearly love to see a couple more players in the door this club of ours has certainly not been idle.

We’ve spent big bucks and there is more spending to come.

By the time the season kicks off at the end of the month we’ll be ready.
