Why Aaron Mooy Would Be The Ideal Answer To Celtic’s Defensive Midfield Issue.

Yesterday there were stories about how Aaron Mooy might soon become available for free. There is a debate as to whether or not he would fit into the Celtic side, and if we the club and the manager should make a move to bring him in.

Aaron Mooy is 31.

On the surface of it he does not appear to fit the Celtic profile at all. But Ange knows him, Ange respects him and if he’s available on a free he might well be interested.

Mooy is big, aggressive and physically strong. As the club gets set to call it quits on the Vicinius Souza deal, this could be the perfect solution. Everything about it makes sense.

If he can play in the system, and we can get him free, we should probably do it.

This isn’t a bling type punt on a famous name.

This isn’t penny pinching or some sort of cheap option.

Ange doesn’t have to extensively watch this guy or test him to see if he’s the “right sort” to sign for us. He already knows all that. He already knows whether Mooy can play in the system.

If we go for this guy, that will because the boss is convinced.

I would welcome a signing like that.

It is a risk free bit of business, one that will almost certainly work out well.

Mooy has played at a decent level. He’s currently in China, where he still has a year left on his deal, although this is the rumour, that his club might be willing to let him go.

There is no question that we’ll be monitoring this and if it’s true don’t be surprised if we do make the move for him.

The “net spend” obsessives will definitely try to suggest that this is the club selling the manager short … but to me it would be the smart thing to do.

Yeah, he is an excellent player and it would be a fantastic signing. We should be pursuing this one immediately.

  • Bob (original) says:

Hmmm, players who choose to go to China seem to be either at the end of their careers looking for a final payday – or lacking ambition?

On the face of it, a player from the Chinese league doesn’t seem like the best option?

And he is on the wrong side of 30.

As much as we do need a defensive midfielder with a bit of steel,

just can’t believe that there aren’t better options out there?

    • Seppington says:

There maybe aren’t any options that Ange approves of available right now, so Mooy might be a solution on a 2-year deal whilst we find a younger alternative?

  • SSMPM says:

Ange said, in relation to a certain Brazilian midfielder just the other day, that there are plenty of good players out there so we can quickly move on from him. So why settle for Mooy, 30yrs + and what seems like a misfit to our style of play when there’s loads of time left in the transfer window and why then wait 2 years for a younger alternative to Mooy. Box yourself in why don’t you.
The idea that this would be risk free is not convincing at all or that somehow it is the only choice available to us and why right now. We’re already paying wages out for pretty much unused players. I’ll support the manager if he brings Mooy in as I did when we brought McCarthy in but it would not in my opinion be a progressive move as that was not either and seems quite desperate talk. There are plenty of good players out there

Not convinced our style of play needs such a player. Hatate and Guchi are a pair of buzzers who do a lot of defensive work and harrying

Saw Mooy play at Wembley in a Championship play-off. He was younger then. Can’t say I was all that impressed.

I have watched Aaran Mooy play in televised games and he is much better now than at 21 years old when he played for St. Mirren. Yes, he could do the job for Celtic. He has been playing 80 to 90 mins / game for Shanghai. He has had no major injuries for the last two years. He works hard on his fittness.
Central midfield defender, is the most important and specialized position for top class teams.
My question is, could Chris Jullien play in this position or does lack of experience rule him out? Fans know how good he was as a central back.

Aaron Mooy is a small fellow. He plays within the rules of football and gets very few yellow cards. I would not call him aggressive. He effectively stops the forward momentum of attackers. Celtic FC will not pay him anywhere near his Chinese club wage. Moving from China might be a lifestyle choice for Aaron and his family. Good luck to him.

Aaron is 175 cm tall. Average height. Sorry. At a pinch he could play for Man City and not let them down. Over the past few years, foreign players in the Chinese SL have had disputes over contracts and delayed payments by Clubs. No reports of squabbles with Aaron.
