Without A Doubt, Celtic Played Like Champions Today.

I want to be euphoric after that, but it feels wrong somehow. For, what did this side do today other than what we knew they were capable of? Everything about that today was absolutely brilliant, with excellent displays from everyone on the pitch.

But over it all is this fact; this is what this manager expects of this team now, and so why should we not expect the same? Does it take away the fun from days like this? God no, that’s what you follow football to watch. That’s what every single one of us would want to see from our team … but days like this should be filled with awe at what we just saw.

And you know what? I’m not. Because we’ve seen that in flashes, in patches, and for long stretches of games at various times over the last year. It was a matter of time before it all came together in a single 90 minutes; indeed, had we not watched the thrashings of St Johnstone and Motherwell at home last season we still may not have a frame of reference for it.

But we did see those things, and so of course that frame of reference exists. That performance, as exceptional as it was, has to be judged by one set of standards only; our own. And based on that, this was no more than what was in the realms of possibility.

This is when you know that a team has arrived at where it was intended to be, when the opposition and what they do no longer provide the standard to beat far less to aspire to. Celtic stands alone on days like this, alone and above the rest in Scotland, far removed from the hum-drum and the mundane and the scrappy. From the long ball up the park or the scrambled goal in a packed penalty area. On days like this, we are in a different class.

We are the standard now, and try as the rest might they aren’t going to touch us. We are so clearly the best football team in this country that the debate itself seems vaguely insulting, as though it’s only being had to sell us short.

Everything about that today was brilliant; three of the goals were so near to the top drawer that you could close down the goal of the season awards right now with only these as nominations. But what do you do with Jota’s against Abaerdeen or Abada’s from last week? You see what I’m saying? On weeks like this it feels like we’re really competing against us.

Likewise with the player of the year awards; it would be God’s little joke after all the chatter about which of our front men if the guy who won it actually proved to be Greg Taylor; a subversion of expectations so dramatic Game of Thrones wouldn’t have scripted it. But you know what? If they did the shortlist tomorrow, there he’d be … with a chance.

That, today, was exceptional in every sense of the word except the definition we’re used to; this felt feels like nothing more than the latest piece of evidence for that which we already knew. That this is a special team under a special manager and that the sky is the limit for what they might achieve and how far they might go.

That today was brilliant, absolutely and without equivocation. And it still might not be the best this team is capable of. We might yet come to see this as “just another day at the office” before the season ends. That’s worth a moment or two to think about.

I was a wee bit worried about the refereeing when we were denied a stonewall penalty in the first couple of minutes but the Bhoys just went ahead and did their thing.

    • Roonsa says:

I thought the referee handled the game fairly well to be honest. He was consistent with his decisions and didn’t allow Killie to clog our players like they normally do. There was one when Jens landed baws first on Laugherty’s boot and you could see the big hun cunt twisting it in but, other than that, I can’t remember too many times when I was like FFS ref.

Killie not watering that disaster of a pitch before kick off actually worked against them. GTs beautiful through ball for Kyogo wouldn’t have held up as did for the first goal. Celtic clearly knew from that example and subsequently that’s how you play on the plastic. Firm passes that get past the first defender and hold up for the player running on.

I am obviously delighted at the score today but I am not going to go overboard. Killie are a poor team and have a hun cunt shite manager. I really hope they and (less likely) Livi go down this season.

Great to see five different scorers today. That Jota strike was lovely and those two bicycle kick goals were hilarious too. Liquid football!

  • Nick66 says:

Brilliant display of football today. If there was an award for pass of the season, Greg Taylor would be in pole position with that pass to Maeda, for his assist, for the first goal.

  • Scud Missile says:

Wee Shugs latest headline Celtic go 1 nil up after 7 minutes only another 83 minutes to hold on for 3 points.

    • Roonsa says:

Who the fuck is wee Shug? Tell him he’s a prick fae me.

      • Scud Missile says:

Wee Shug is the man with a broken beak having to talk through his nose spewing his Turkish Delight on Clyde SSB and attempts to write an article for for a declining newspaper in Scotland.
The PERFECT PERFORMANCE today but the auld bawbag will find fault with it and probably tell everyone chances got squandered.

        • Roonsa says:

And we should care about what he says why precisely?

          • Malc says:

Exactly. Everything wrong with this blog – too many people (including the owner) concerned about what utter nobodies might think.

  • Garry Cowan says:

Unbelievable performance today , champions doing what champions do HH ..and big Starfelts face when he scored was a snap shot of the spirit in this team it spoke volumes

  • Peterbrady says:

HAIL!HAIL! In Ange we trust cmon the hoops good luck to ruud PSV destroy the sevco zombie scum

  • Kevan McKeown says:

Great tae watch, totally dismantled Kilmarnock. That pitch was hellish lookin tae. Celtic support in great voice, tho only disappointment, havin tae listen tae songs that have nae place at a football game imo. And the sectarian singin against mcinness at one point was shockin. Only lettin the club down with that tripe and makin us as bad as the other bigots.

    • Jim says:

      Well said

    • Roonsa says:

The only thing wrong about that McInnes song is that it doesn’t fucking rhyme.

Cheer up Derek McInnes (too many syllables)
      Oh what can it mean?

I mean, who actually thinks that is acceptable? To all the cringeworthy dicks singing that utter claptrap. Please fuck off and go support a team worthy of that sort of pish. Partick Thistle or something. Idiots.

    • Droopy McCool says:

My thoughts exactly, fucking ira songs, moronic imbeciles constantly dragging us down to the hun level. What the fuck has that got to do with Celtic???

And loads of us can’t get a ticket to away games cos of these tits.

    • james gordon says:

      totally agree

    • Woodyiom says:

Absolutely spot on Kevin – if someone can’t support Celtic the right way then they’re not a supporter and can GTF. That type of signing gives us nowhere to go with our justified gripes about the sectarian abuse our players and fans receive. It doesn’t matter how many are singing or how small/big the minority involved are – ONE supporter singing those songs is one too many. The club needs to start dealing with these idiots big time and maybe if Ange talked to them directly about the issue – he must hear it and must be embarrassed.

  • Johnny Green says:

I’m not getting carried away either, we played well within ourselves and we will get better as the season progresses, The only negative was the Jenz injury, I hope it wasn’t too bad.

  • Martin says:

We played well. We are capable of beating everyone domestically. But we will have bad days too so let’s keep ourselves grounded.

That pitch… On the telly it looked like actual carpet. I’m sure the stuff I play 5s on is better…

  • Geoff says:

Didn’t play and win well enough to get the BBC’s “ran riot” accolade after Sevco beat one of the leagues poorest teams at home.
We have to settle for thumped and thrashed.
Mcinnes took defeat by us well as he usually does.

  • kingmurdy says:

brilliant performance from the ‘tic….greg taylor has upped his game so much..
and agree with kevan…the singing from the supporters was disgraceful….what the fuk has the ira got to do with celtic fc?….and this is coming from an irish man, with nationlist belief’s living in ireland…and the derek mcinnes song was shameful too…seemed to be from the whole celtic support….imbeciles…dragging our club down….

    • Geoff says:

      Totally agree
The number of songs they can sing without offensive lyrics are endless
Just giving the media and critics something to beat us with after every good performance

    • Scud Missile says:

Our club has as does sevco let’s not beat about the Bush here.

  • PAUL MCCANN says:

david dickingson was the ref but it was celtic who were the real deal

  • John Copeland says:

And yet, McInnes could not bring himself to say that it will take a very good side to beat Celtic domestically this season. Not a bit of congratulations from the Rangers supporting, Kilmarnock head bummer! If there is a bigger dud loser in Scotland ,I have yet to see it! According to the ex the Rangers player, Kilmarnock were the architects of today’s thrashing, and not Celtic’s domination.
