Football Comes To A Standstill Out Of Respect For Who? Certainly Not For The Fans.

So the decision has been taken and it’s as grim as it was grimly inevitable.

The whole of our professional sport will come to a stand-still, regardless of the impact on an already torturous fixture calendar. Official government guidance was that the show could and probably should go on.

Other sports will not be closing their doors.

But football has decided to disenfranchise thousands of its own customers, up and down the country, by needlessly cancelling games. Did you book travel? Tough. Did you book hotels? Tough. Did you cancel work to be at the game? Tough.

Because you too have now been dragooned into the utterly false impression that this is a country that has been plunged into incalculable despair.

All this out of “respect” for some old woman who lived in a castle.

It’s preposterous. This is a country that treats its citizens (subjects) like children. Grief used to be a personal thing. Now it is imposed on us, collectivised whether we like it or not.

If you thought that it was disrespectful for there to be games, or if you were too overcome with the emotions of it all this weekend you had a simply choice; don’t go to the game. Stay at home and cry into your Golden Jubilee sofa cushions and wear your commemorative tea towel as a flannel.

But let the rest of the world carry on as normal.

The SPFL has bottled it here. They had the chance to put up a sign that said “business as usual” and treat our supporters like adults with minds of their own. It is not up to the governing bodies to speak for fans and presume that we’re all too out of our minds wondering how we’ll cope without this bizarre figure in our lives.

Fans should have been allowed to make that decision on their own.

Most of us – those of us who aren’t afraid to watch our team at the moment – wanted the games to go ahead.

So that’s where the respect should have started and finished, with the people who keep the game afloat in Scotland, but as per usual that was the last thing anyone cared about.

    Utter disgrace.

Perfectly put again by you James. I have no allegiance to the royal family so why should I have to suffer not seeing my weekly fix of football. The monarchy is not only outdated but it is also non-essential in modern day society ,I didn’t see the start of the NFL season cancelled last night oh wait it wasn’t

    • Robert Jenkins says:

The NFL is in the USA which doesn’t have a Monarch.

When JFK was assassinated The AFL cancelled its game while the NFL didn’t, it was a decision Pete Rozell called his worst mistake as commissioner.

Still think it would be better if games went ahead, as was pointed out people can make their own decisions.

  • Clachnacuddin and the Hoops says:

Just hope it doesn’t have the same effect as the last reboot for them had (Covid) when a high flying Hoops team self destructed from top to bottom and a dying on their feet Sevco went unbeaten in the league all season…

Disgusting decision to cancel the fixtures – then again Sevco are in free fall so nuff’ said –

Hoops fans outta pocket from non refundable travel and hotels should sue The SPF-HEll…

  • Geoff says:

Show of respect for the head of an institution that has had its boot on the throats of Catholics and the Irish for centuries and has spawned other institutions that openly show and encourage that hatred?
    Just saying!

  • Kevan McKeown says:

Almost as if they’re tryin tae force everybody in Britain tae mourn. Should be up tae the clubs between them tae decide and the decision no taken for them. Would surprise some of these sycophants just how much of the public actually disagree with royalty and don’t need it force fed tae them.

  • Johnny Green says:

Unfortunately the Royal Family parasites are indeed adored and revered by their majority fawning public, the commoners as they are affectionately referred to by their Royal Masters. The rest of us are reluctantly forced into this mass despair by an uncaring state led ruling body. We are not forced to mourn or grieve, but we are forced join the National mass mood of the country that dictates that we all stop enjoying our normal lives for the duration of their enforced mourning period,

It makes me puke being dictated to by anyone, far less the so called elite ruling class, they are hangers-on every last one of them.

  • Roonsa says:

We live in the United Kingdom. The pettinent word in this case is Kingdom. As such when the head of the monarchy croaks, we have a price to pay.

If you live in Scotland and did note vote for an independence party, do not moan at me. In fact, fuck you.

THIS IS WHAT YOU VOTED FOR. Idiots.

    • MarkE says:

An independent Scotland would still be subjects of the crown

    • john clarke says:

The United Kingdom is a concept not a place. Great Britain or Britain is the place.
The United Kingdom exists as the Government of …. and the Constitution of the United Kingdom which doesn’t exist as a codified document. I like to call the place Great Britain.
The Olympic team is correctly named Team Great Britain or Team GB for short.

Big stir, you have started James. Good fun.

  • Gordon Ashley says:

Hearing this decision will cost Ayr Utd 60-70k in lost revenue with their top of the league clash with partick now to be played in a midweek, a scandal for a small club who can’t afford that kind of loss

  • MarkE says:

Only date this year this one cancelled game could be played now is the midweek between the first match after the world cup break, the away Aberdeen game on 17th December, and the Christmas Eve game at home to St Johnstone, given our schedule is fully booked!

Other than that its going to be in the New Year, which will suit struggling sevco as it gives them time to get over their slump and bed in their new manager(and possibly new players too) after Gio gets his marching orders!

On the plus side for us though, at least the players can now how a full weeks rest and preparation for the trip to Poland to face the sharp counter attacking Donetsk!

  • Julie M says:

Spot on with this article, grief is a personal thing and should not be forced on anyone . In a world famous club like Glasgow Celtic who are a club for everyone but the fans don’t hide the fact that we are anti monarchy and have an allegiance to Ireland which goes back for decades. I understand the club across the city will be happy following suit given the background to the club and the unionist/loyalist following. Celtic fans on the other hand are being forced to against their will . This is not what we want, we have come a point in history where we will not be dictated to or be second best to and yet here we are letting them tell us what we have to do again. I expected more from club . And I think a lot more feel the same.

  • SSMPM says:

It’s all a load of hypocrite billy bollocks. How many of that midden scum religiously go daily or weekly to pray with or for the head of their church. Interesting though that they’ve accepted the principle that when you die, you’re dead

  • Robert Jenkins says:

I’m a Republican but respect Brenda as a person.

But when you see a grown man crying and saying, “I luved er like me own muvver if not mor,” we should be asking if people in this country have serious mental problems.

The only good thing about the games being cancelled is the Huns have a few more days to stew before the get pumped by Napoli.

    Third 4-0 in a row?

  • Bob (original) says:

Well that’s the first PR mis-step by the royal family around the queen’s passing.

If a statement had been issued – quickly – from the palace, to say that during the ‘official’ 10 day mourning period the family respects those who want to mourn privatey – but that life goes on and nothing should be cancelled – and that is what the queen would have wanted.

Now, that would have been appreciated, removed any uncertainty.
Players would wear armbands, have a minute’s silence, as per – and the paying punters could decide themselves if they wanted to attend a match this weekend or not.

If people are annoyed already, then they are going to be seriously p!ssed off by the time we get to the coronation. 🙁

  • john clarke says:

Geoff, you are right and I know what you mean, but I don’t think this Queen made things worse for the descendants of the oppressed people you mentioned. She was hardly allowed to speak-out. I agree that the Monarchy is totally irrelevant. One day mourning for not able to watch football should be enough. I don’t hate any of the Royal Family.
Harry is the pick of them. His initiative in starting the Invictis Games was impressive.

  • Johnny Green says:

I cannot have a bet on the horses this weekend, I cannot watch the football and I basically cannot do anything that I would normally enjoy of a weekend, and all because a wee auld wummin, who lived in the lap of luxury all of her life, has popped her clogs. She means absolutely nothing to me and, since I don’t expect to be mentioned in her will, I don’t care a fkn jot about the mourning period.

    • Droopy McCool says:

It’s a lovely day Johnny, get out on your bike and go for a nice coffee somewhere.
Alternatively stay home and invite a nice lady round for dinner.

  • SSMPM says:

This has nothing to do with respect or our government or SFA/SPFL’s authority’s compliance, more a reinforcement of their protestant hunnery. Listening to tv and radio commentary, listening to football’s leaders and Truss and Sturgeon’s sycophantic opportunist drivel makes me sick.
Now if this was the 12th of July would they cancel their protestant anti Catholic marches or would carry on calling it a mark of respect

  • Jim Duffy says:

You’re right James, maybe 1 day of mourning black arm bands, flags at half mast but 10 days is simply ridiculous.

  • Jimmy R says:

This is a scandalous decision. We have said for decades that the blazers are out of touch with the reality of the fans’ day to day life. Just how far out of touch they have shown with this crazy decision. It smacks of box ticking to earn brownie points and the hoped for “future honours” rather than the good governance of the game.

  • Willie davies says:

Exactly true doesnt surprise u with the incapable at the spfl but no 1 can question these parasites that live of the fans not represent them
