Each Scottish based player who plays at the World Cup earns his club £9000 per day.

Two of our boys have now gone through the Group Stages to their places in the next round. Juranovic’s Croatia may yet join them there.

Daizen Maeda’s Japan will need to perform a minor miracle against Spain. But it’s not over for any of them.

Today’s game between Australia and Denmark wasn’t a classic by any manner of means, but big Aaron Mooy turned in yet another excellent display in the midfield as his team ran out 1-0 winners. France’s defeat against Tunisia left the Africans with broken hearts; had Denmark managed even an equaliser the Aussies would have been out.

But they never looked as if they would, as the Australians defended resolutely and held on for the win. Mooy therefore joined Cameron Carter Vickers in the second stages of the competition, after the US had narrowly won last night.

Obviously we want every one of our international players to return safely and without injury, but it’s good to see that they are doing so well, and that all of them had an interest going into the final series of group games. The first two of them have made it.

Juranovic and Maeda may yet have a role to play in deciding whether their two teams do the same. Celtic’s incoming new boy Alastair Johnston won’t be so lucky; his Canada side put up a valiant fight in their two group games so far but are out of the competition already.

This has been one weird World Cup so far, but the Celtic boys have done their respective nations proud and we hope that the others find a way through, and not just for the cash.

It is great to see our players giving it their all on this huge stage.

Australia at 13/2 has given me the first leg of an unlikely Treble I have put on. I just need Poland at 8/1 to beat Argentina and Saudi Arabia at 4/1 to beat Mexico. You never know, it’s been that type of tournament,
