ACSOM yesterday was excellent in its rousing defence of Carl Starfelt.

This guy is still the subject of constant, and tiresome, sniping from certain people in the mainstream media, the most obvious of which is the idiotic Keevins who just won’t let up.

There was a time – and not that long ago – when the media found it much easier to demonise and by virtue of that destroy Celtic players and managers. Their power to do so is greatly reduced due to the prominence of fan media which stands up for our footballers and allows them the space to grow into their roles. Starfelt has been doing so.

We are not watching the complete player at the moment.

Starfelt actually plays better on the right side of defence, but that position belongs to Carter Vickers. Kobayashi is actually our only naturally left sided centre back … which is why he’s been signed.

For all that, I like Starfelt. I do wish he’s concentre more before trying to pass the ball, but in fact he’s not doing anything that I haven’t watched players at the very top of the game do.

This is because the style of football we play – basically playing the ball out from the back along the floor – is now commonplace in the game and so are the counters to it.

We’re not going to ditch the policy, in no small measure because it works as our results clearly show. But he’s still raw and needs to work on some things. For an idiot like Keevins this makes him fair game.

But the club has enough confidence to keep putting him in front of the media, and Celtic fan media continues to fight his corner.

And that is such a positive thing to see. Like I said, I was delighted yesterday when I heard the guys on ACSOM give such a rousing defence of the player and all of us should be doing it.

Because there are elements of the media who would love to destroy this guy, in no small part because some of them, and Keevins is one of them, miss having that kind of power.

Which is all the more reason to permanently keep it out of their grubby hands.

No one has to destroy Starfelt when he continuously pushes the self destruct button himself. He gets away with a lot of mistakes in the SPL but in Europe this guy is a liability, Keevins, in this case, when he says Starfelt is bang average, is absolutely correct. He can be a back up to CCV and Kobayashi, that is his future as he is certainly not good enough to be a mainstay of our defence. Please, get the blinkers off James.

  • Johnny Green says:

By the way, I though he had a great game in midweek apart from the early glaring error when, with no real pressure on him, he passed the ball straight to one of their attackers. That could have cost us dearly and, since he is prone to doing that on a regular basis, we cannot continue to tolerate his inadequacies. He is not good enough, it’s as simple as that.

    • Charlie Kelly says:

Simply not good enough when on Wednesday night, both jaranovic and McGregor both passed the ball st mirren players in one case we were attacking and McGregor had too chase back to about 12yds out from the goal as both he and Jaranovic were caught out of position, does that mean they’re both not good enough, also the amount of time Hart has misplaced or dropped defence in trouble with his lack of concentration or or just lack of skill

Prime example on SSB the other night

A Celtic fan phoned in to talk about how good Kobayashi was on his debut

Within about a minute , after being led away from the callers point by the presenter they were having pops at Starfelt

  • John Copeland says:

Isn’t it amazing how a sports scoop like Keevins can call a professional footballer ‘bang average ‘ .A person who works for the daily Record newspaper ,now that’s the true definition of ‘bang average ‘! Only in Scotland ,only in Scotland !

    • Johnny Green says:

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

When Keevins said that Carl Starfelt was ‘bang average’, that was his own stopped clock moment.

  • Tony B says:

Keevins apart from being a demented auld duffer, suffers from the same complaint as Neil McCann: he sold out years ago and has been a bitter wee man ever since.

Everything he says has to be seen through that lens when talking about Celtic or its players.

He might even accidentally be right on the odd occasion, but like the boy who cried wolf,
    no one believes him.

I say leave him to shite in his adult nappy.

    NURSE!

  • S Thomas says:

He is a decent passer of the ball, but it’s when teams are running at us with pace, that’s were the problems lie. Ange needs to have a word with him for next months cup final. I’d be saying to him, under no circumstances do you do anything mad in our box, or I’m docking you wages. I’ve never understood why defenders have there hands all over players, in penalty boxes.

  • Eldraco says:

We have a squad, like all squads players fight for their positions, SF is best on the right side of the park ipso facto he fights for that position against CCV.

IF the left is vacant due to injury then he can step in.

Ange has blinkers on this player imo ,make him fight CCV. most of the squad do in other positions why not SF.

  • Kevan McKeown says:

Tae give the guy some credit he is a decent full back. Tho usin the excuse that even the best players are prone tae slack passin’s a bad comparison. It’s the regularity that’s the big problem here. Even when he’s no under any pressure i.e. against St. Mirren, he continues tae make the same error and at some point its gonnae cost us. Ah wouldnae call it ‘snipin’ either. It’s part of his game thats becomin a pattern and the support have noticed.

  • John S says:

Why are churnalists so keen to besmirch Celtic players ?

  • SSMPM says:

When we get new players into the club I’ll always give them my support and whenever the manager plays them I’ll back them, because they represents Celtic. Players need time to bed in. We’re passed the bedding in period now with CS and I now agree with most of the above comments that aye, at times, he’s a few fries short of a Happy Meal. We should look to keep him and support him as a member of the squad though, he has his place, just not first pick.
I’ve got high hopes for our new left footed CB, he brings good balance, can play a pass, and importantly has that energy his compatriots have brought. Kobayashi’s unlike the Usual Suspects.

  • Tony Miller says:

Carl Starfelt my man of the match v St Mirren.

  • king murdy says:

what does james mean “not complete” ?…….the guy is 27 ffs !!!
    i don’t like slagging off celtic players…..but big starfelt is a liability…
anyone who thinks different needs to take off the green tinted specs….
ange, after spending big on this guy, probably feels he need to continually play him…..justify the sum……
    more fanboy shit from james…..
