Celtic’s Reported Juranovic Fee Is Shockingly Low. That’s Just Bad Business From Us.

Are we desperate to sell players?

Because it looks like we can’t wait to get Juranovic off the wage bill. Is the master poker player, back at the table again? Because it’s been a long time since I saw us play a strong hand this badly. Juranovic for £7 million? It’s like a bad joke.

Giakoumakis too looks as if he will go for a shockingly low fee. I don’t mind us selling players, I kind of expect it, but I do mind us advertising ourselves as a cheap option for clubs who don’t want to spend big money.

I do mind us flogging the family silver for pennies.

It send out the wrong message entirely, and whilst I believe that the Korean will be a monster of an upgrade on Giakoumakis I still cannot believe that we’re apparently ready to sell him for a low fee.

There are people at Celtic who will say “aah but we’ve got a better footballer, younger, on a long-term deal and posted a profit into the bargain …” and that will be true … but that’s not what concerns me here.

That’s not where the trouble lies.

Neither Giakoumakis nor Juranovic is irreplaceable.

Giakoumakis has a happy knack of scoring goals no other player at club would score.

But he’s not the finished article the way Kyogo is, and if the Korean is a better all-round footballer and can also score goals – and the signs are good – then it’s not a bad deal for us to get shot of one to get the other.

I don’t mind us selling Juranovic either. He’s never looked like a World Cup semi-final player when he’s played domestically except maybe on a handful of occasions when teamed up with Liel Abada on the right hand side.

Rumours have dogged him for months, and perhaps it’s just that simple, with the manager no longer wanting to be dogged by rumours.

Neither would make my A List in this Celtic team, a list that has on it Carter Vickers, Maeda, Hatate, O’Riley, Jota, Abada, McGregor and Kyogo. What troubles me is that if we’re advertising our willingness to sell players for this chump change that clubs are going to believe they can come in and unsettle these guys for similarly ludicrous fees.

It’s not about anything other than self-defence.

You do not advertise yourself as an easy mark or a weak suck. This makes us look desperate, this makes us look like a team that needs to get money in the door fast, and I know we’re not that.

All transfer business – whether incoming or outgoing – is ultimately a show of force.

A test of strength. And this makes us look bad.

I get that in some ways it also makes us look ruthless; contract rebels being shipped out the door pronto before they affect the rest of the team. And yes, I think we’ve got a cracker in Johnston and if we get the Korean sensation we’re more than covered in the forward line. But this looks so much like bad business, like the thin end of what we could get if we held onto our cards a bit longer.

Now it might just be that the manager doesn’t want to do that.

Maybe he wants these guys gone quick and so we’re willing to do business at a reasonable fee so he can bring in the replacements he really wants. And I would understand that except that the more we bring in for these guys the more he gets to spend in the summer … so I thought we’d really hold out for the money these two are worth.

It’s disappointing that we seem as if we won’t.

In all honesty, the way i see it is they can’t all go for dembele dollars. For example juranovic we got for a steal, also big gorgios didn’t cost the earth. I’m sure Warsaw and VVV fans felt hard done by but the truth is we’ll be doubling our money AND some within the space of 18 months. Some would say that’s good business.
Ange maybe isn’t quite convinced by them or it’s simply just the fact they want to leave, you’ve said it yourself if they don’t want to be here get them off the wage bill. The money we make off them could bring in 2 YOUNG cracking players we literally know nothing about but with the eye ange has for a player he could have the next dembele already in mind. They are low ball offers compared to what we’ve been getting but if they don’t want to be here then the manager/CEO have to decide whether to keep unhappy players on the books wasting everyone’s time or do what the manager said and if a quick turn around in players is what’s required to get the squad he wants then trust the process

  • Scud Missile says:

James you need to get grip, you seem to think every player we sign is worth megabucks.
Your beginning to sound quite a but like wee Coco the klown at ibrox noise who thinks all sevco players are valued at over 30 or 40 million.
What right do we have to buy players for washers and then expect other clubs to throw funny money at us,if that is your thinking why did we get the same players so cheap in the first place then, double standards if you ask me.

    • Shoogle McDoug says:

      I agree 100%.
We can’t EXPECT anything, when we start doing that we come across as pompous and arrogant. That’s not a football club I want to follow.

  • Charlie Kelly says:

Unfortunately your only worth what the buyer is willing to pay, personally I don’t think he’s worth more than 10mil sell him if he doesn’t want to play for us get rid.dont need his negatively in and around dressing room,he will realise his mistake in leaving us

  • Neil Smith says:

Fees are paper talk. Wait and see. As for the PL suggestion… Give it a break.

  • Scud Missile says:

All talk of him being a top quality player has gone to his head after his performances in the World Cup,he has now hit a rough patch in his play.

  • Saulgoodman says:

Said before bite your hand for £10 mill – 1 good game against Brazil hes bang average in champions league + after ibrox im suprised anyone be interested at that price !

    • Dora says:

Exactly, after that ibrox horror show-I’m stunned anyone is bidding for his services.
Very decent player on his day but figures of 15-17 mill being thrown around last week which was never gonna happen.
If Celtic get 7-8 mill-it’s good business…lot better than a player running down his contract and getting nada!

  • Liam61 says:

Value is determined by the buyer. Where are the bids from others? Blogs and websites have applied same logic as others have to Fat Boy and the show pony

  • Roonsa says:

I agree 100% with this article.

When you consider what the huns got for Bassey, why are we doing this?

  • An Fear Mór says:

Is the transfer fee of a player connected to his salary and the length of his contract?

And could the relatively low transfer fee be related to their wages?

Genuine questions, I don’t fully understand all the ins and outs of how transfer fees are calculated.

  • Woodyiom says:

Lets wait and see what price we get when we sell them (IF we sell them) before castigating the club guys. One thing the board haven’t been known for in the last twenty years is not driving a hard bargain when it comes to transfers now is it !!! Paper talk is exactly just that – TALK!

  • Jim says:

All things considered its not a terrible deal if it turns out to be true. He is a good player, world class pace, but far from flawless. Nobody at Celtic seems to have ironed out his positional errors.

We bought him for 1m did we not?

Sure we’d take 10-15m if anybody was offering it, but a 6m profit is not bad. Besides, we’ve shown him the exit door now by bringing in Johnston. Time to take the profit and wish him well. He has been a fine player for the club.

Forget about Bassey. That was Ajax’s Tore Andre Flo moment, never to be repeated.

  • JimBhoy says:

Don’t listen to paper evaluations, it’s another form of attack on Celtic.

These guys will leave when Celtic want them too. There’ll not be many destinations to compare with Celtic.

We can read about their regrets at leaving Celtic at the end of their careers.

Money talks and I wish them all the best.

  • Effarr says:

    Maybe there’s a 200% sell-on clause.

  • SSMPM says:

Not sure about this at all, if true. Does anyone knows if he has a sell on clause fee in his contract?
Unfortunately it would appear that there is no higher bid atm so you’re worth lies there with bids that are in or … don’t sell. We should not be in a rush to take the early bids but it appears we are, so hopefully it comes with good reasoning and a hefty sell on percentage.
We can’t really judge one transfer against the other, god only knows what possessed Ajax in their foolish reactive move for Shirley but it hasn’t improved the market value here sadly.

  • John S says:

The Juranovic deal was probably agreed at the end of the World Cup. Otherwise it’s down to contracts and probabilities.

  • Stevie bhoy says:

Welcome to life under Lawell pt 2

  • Eldraco says:

The master at work, sell on at 150% plus add on. ?

  • Thomas says:

I haven’t seen a quote from Celtic even mentioning a fee. The fees quoted are from media sources who have no love for our club.
