More Giakoumakis Rumours And A Baffling Lack Of Coherence In Celtic’s Stance.

The latest in a long line of Giakoumakis rumours – for that is all any of them has been thus far – is in the public domain today I can barely believe what it is that I am reading. The alleged transfer fee is low.

Shockingly low.

Does anyone really believe that we’re about to sell him for £3.5 million?

That we couldn’t get more than that if we put him up for sale?

I think it’s extraordinary, and if it’s true someone at Celtic owes us some answers. Not flannel. Not leaving the manager twisting in the wind. Someone damned well owes us an explanation.

I will be astounded – absolutely astounded – if we’re letting him leave for that. I don’t care how good the source is, or how good people think the source is. There is a huge misconception about all these “people in the know.”

You know who is in the know?

Ange Postecoglou, and over and over again he has utterly refuted these stories.

How many times has the guy got to say this stuff?

What was it he said at the weekend? More than 80% of what’s in the public domain is not remotely true.

One story pops up today though and the rumour factory goes into overdrive.

The manager and the player have fallen out. Says who? Did they look like they had at the weekend? There is a clause in his contract that allows him to leave for X amount. As if we would ever have agreed to that as a club without that number being enormous. The same story, by the way, has been circulating about Juranovic.

I’ve almost lost counts of the number of times I’ve read that “Giakoumakis to Club X” was a done deal.

Wasn’t there supposed to be a medical taking place at the weekend for either him or Juranovic? Funny that both of them were at Hampden, playing their part in getting us to another final.

If the reports are to be believed there is interest in this guy on two continents and more than one club in Europe wants to sign him. He’s on a long term deal. He’s still giving his all for the team when he’s selected.

So tell me why we would do it like this.

There will be a story when he actually signs for somebody but that fee … that barely leaves us enough to buy his replacement on the modern market, even if we’re shopping in one of those far flung corners of the globe.

It’s not that I disbelieve either the media or the “in the know” types making these claims, although I have to be honest my confidence in them is pretty low.

It’s that selling him so cheap when we don’t even have his replacement in makes zero sense.

Nothing about how this is being done makes any sense. Clubs do not just sell players on long-term contracts after one failed contract negotiation and here we seem to be doing it twice.

Ange said the other day that we’re not pushing anyone out the door … but I’ll tell you, we’re not doing much to hold these guys to their responsibilities either and that creates concerns for the future.
