The latest Ibrox fantasy has made the papers today and it’s a good one, being pushed by Brian Laudrup of all people which just goes to show that there’s a media gig for anyone out there who wants one and who once played for one of their clubs.
This particular delusion is that Celtic will fold if we lose the League Cup Final. Not that anyone amongst our support realistically expects that to happen, but if we did Laudrup – and he’s not alone over there in harbouring this fantasy – thinks we’d crumble.
He also thinks it would be the shot in the arm for The Mooch’s team, to make them believers in themselves. I’ve written about this before, that sometimes a team just needs to win something to hit the higher gears … but this is a team most of which won a league and a Scottish Cup already. Shouldn’t they have gotten that taste by now?
Are we really to believe they are just a League Cup away from being world beaters?
I always enjoy their wee diversions into fantasy. They amuse me. Laudrup is not known for rabble rousing nonsense, so I was surprised to read this kind of stuff from him, but the idea itself is just nutty and without merit of any sort.
We have a nine-point lead. This team does not rattle. This manager does not get spooked by one-off results. He continues to drive this club onwards and keep them focussed on one game at a time. In a sense, Laudrup is a bit guilty of magical thinking, the sort that Dave King was indulging in when he made his “house of cards” prediction.
But this is the second season after they won the title that was supposed to accomplish the goal of demolishing all Celtic had built … and Laudrup is talking about us throwing it away. Maybe he wants to have a think about the implications of that.
