Ibrox Coach Who Headbutted Celtic Boss Shamed Himself. The Club’s Response Shames Them.

Last night, an Ibrox fan website published a piece with the following headline.

“(Ibrox) women scandal an embarrassment to club as headlines go global.”

We all know what it refers to, and as I pointed out the other day, this is now a story with a worldwide audience. The individual responsible is probably facing a lengthy ban.

But that’s not the worst of it for his club. The reputational damage it has wrought on them is worse, by far, than the punishment of not having this guy around for a while.

I am a keen watcher of how companies and individuals do public relations, and I frequently find myself aghast at some of the ways organisations try to distract attention from or dampen down the impact of a news cycle from Hell.

There are organisations which think that the best way to deal with a story like this is to ignore it.

Bad move. Wrong answer.

The historical example that comes most readily to mind was how the Royal Family dealt with the death of Diana. The longer they tried to maintain that “dignified silence” the more oppressive the atmosphere became.

There are other organisations who try to change the story.

Bad move. Wrong answer.

Everyone can spot that a mile away. It’s transparent.

Deflection has been known to work in Scotland, and I half expect some variation of it to be attempted here before this is over.

A wee bit of Whatabouttery. Someone at Celtic getting the blame of “setting this off” as though the Ibrox coach was simply a windup toy who we went out of our way to provoke.

Don’t be surprised if that’s the road this is heading down.

The negative global headlines were not necessary and nor are those which will ensue if their club decides to contest this case instead of holding their hands up, as they should have done on the first day.

The scandal was his. The true disgrace is theirs.

Their inaction is what has caused it to engulf the whole club.

Whoever is advising them on this is getting it badly, badly wrong.

Let’s hope they keep getting things badly badly wrong….Every little helps.

  • Bob (original) says:

Maybe the Ibrox club needs to bring back Traynor…?

At least he was good for a laugh: his “man spotted under Morelos’ Lamborghini”

had to be his funniest, physically impossible nonsense ever! 🙂

  • Frankie says:

They can also add this to their imaginary 55, worst record in Europe ( goals against and fastest hat trick against) fan jailed for a year , and now McPherson the bullet from the back, what does ol’ their cesspit directors think.

  • Tenaka Khan says:

On the BBC Sportsound podcast Leanne Creighton started discussing the shameful incident by saying they had to talk about how McPherson “got himself caught up in an incident with Fran Alonso”. Hunbelievable…

  • Tony B says:

This is who they are: it is their nature.

As well to ask a scorpion not to sting.

  • Kevan McKeown says:

@ Tenaka Khan. That institutions ‘hate’ for our club goes way beyond football, we know that. They’re more than arrogant enough tae think they shouldnae need tae apologize. So nothin surprises me. As for that other airheed, her sheer annoyance and bitterness at our girls gettin the equalizer was obvious.

  • Rob says:

I thought Celtic and Fran would give them an ultimatum (if they haven’t already) that being, either make a full public apology to Fran, Celtic and football at large or, we ask Police Scotland to prosecute to the full extent of the law.

    That seems fair

    • Kevan McKeown says:

@ Rob. What would’ve been ‘fair,’ is if wee Fran had stuck one right on his Dan Ginn. Halfwit went back the way quick enough after he done it.

  • Roonsa says:

Correction. That lot have no shame.

  • Tracky Tony says:

What do you expect from a club that’s run by bigoted neanderthals nothing is ever their fault n take no responsibility for their actions point incase they still think they are the same club that died in 2012 n now have 55 trophies ? ludicrous delusional fantasists

  • Scouse bhoy says:

The root of all this is the gutless spineless sports media with their refusal to call out the same club insult.

  • Effarr says:

The reputational damage it has brought on them???? Old Firm Sevco aren’t the least concerned about “reputational damage”. A headbut from one of their employees? That’s a moment for congratulations for them. He’ll be a legend now, upsides with Bell.

As for the world watching: with all due respect, I think the cost of living crisis, the natural disasters and the war now in Europe will take preference. The “ world” won’t be losing any sleep even if he had shot Alonso.

It will all have fizzled out by next week.

  • JimBhoy says:

Their reputation preceeds them just ask barcelona, manchester> I was in Strasbourg few years back in the town square, wee Irish bar and the rangers had been there the week before and the bar staff said there were riots and place was trashed.

It’s in the genes. As a previous blogger posted a headbutt would be a badge of honour, free beer at the local etc. Would you want this kind of person being a role model for your lass in a football team?

Polis should be procesing the thug’s case as I type.

  • John S says:

Those who condone thuggery are thugs.

  • SSMPM says:

Agree John, “If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem”, and I can’t see a police charge coming down the road eh. Nonetheless the brotherhood will try their best to mitigate this cowardly mouse’s assault on his behalf. More shame on them. HH

  • Michael Clark says:

If I’m being honest none of this surprises me. Any other club would have acted on this with immediate effect but this wouldn’t have happened at any other club except that one. It shows them up for what they are, embarrassment or shame doesn’t enter it because everyone involved with the club has the IQ of someone who’s brain was starved of oxygen at birth. We can watch football for the next decade and we’ll never witness behaviour like that again.

  • Jim Ryan says:

They trashed George Square and felt free to repeat the act two months later, with interest. This is what happens when you hardly get a slap on the wrist for first offence.
This disgrace of a club feeds on its sense of self entitlement, knowing full well they are backed by a compliant media and governing bodies. The latest incident epitomises all they stand for.

  • The Real McCoy says:

Perhaps the silence regarding the assault has something to do with Douglas Park’s Motor Group announcement of a new sponsorship of the SWPL this morning. Couldnae make it up.

  • Johnno says:

This whole incident has to be called out for what it really is now. So celtic can’t be seen to celebrate a goal against the scum in case it should cause offence.
Never heard of the likes before yet that is how the scum wants to protray Scottish football to pamper to there arseholes within there support.
Billy boys my hole, more like bully boys and we will never back down from bullies as that cowardly shitehawk proved.
No surrender LOL, continue to keep running away ya shower of gutless scum.
We wouldn’t expect an apology and not to bothered about ever receiving one either as inflicting as much pain as possible in the right manner is good enough for all our celts and long may it continue also.
    Billy crybabies
